Gay Marriage USA
« on: January 22, 2012, 10:47:22 PM »

Given Romney is a Mormon and Gingrich apparently believes in open marriage does this mean that polygamy is on the radar for the USA?

Advanced by the Republican Party?

Will this tolerance apply to all forms of marriage and will there be a universal right for gay people to get hitched?

It would be amusing if the Republicans actually got that through...

Polygamy is a religious belief, unlike a persons decision to become gay and ruin the fabric of society by having gay sex with anything that moves in a very evil and anti-religious way. Obviously.

In that there'd be several million simultaneous spit takes when that was announced.

Polygamy is a religious belief,
Yeah, except when it isn't. Maybe 'polygamy has been observed and condoned within religious communities'.

I'm sure lots of the poly crowd would love marriage available to them too, but considering what marriage is actually about (property sharing) and the state's interest in it (property division on separation) I can't see them considering more than two for now.

I'd tip fixed term marriage making it before 2+ marriages. Imagine  the massive admin benefits in that. (Mexico City floated the idea a while ago to try to unclog their court system. I think it makes sense.)

Legal poly marriages would be a bitch of a thing to negotiate, I would think, from a legal perspective that is...

Depends on the poly relationship. If it was a committed three, for example, it isn't really that much of a stretch.

see what I did there?

:D Yes, yes indeed.

But the depending is the hard part. If it's a relationship with one primary and other secondaries, who gets what and how is it divided (especially in the case of a divorce) etc. That shit is a minefield...

Obviously the holy man would get everything, including the first son, and his bitches would get the unwanted children and a fistful of shame. Because what kind of self-respecting woman marries a man who wants to marry someone else too?

You so sexist.

What kind of woman wants that many men around her?! They'd all just watch football together and be dicks. :)

You under-estimate the market in self-non-respecting.

Eh, it only gets really interesting when it's lots of women marrying lots of men who are married to lots of women who are also married to lots etc etc

Like those "when you sleep one one person, you sleep with many" ads, but with more rings.

There's also issues of consent- what if my first wife consents to my marriage but doesn't consent to my second marriage for example?

Yeah, that's why I think it would work better for set relationships between more than two, not for collect more as you go type of relationships.
