How do you deal with the fact that you're not the best?

Simple enough question really

I have a cousin, she's fifteen, has formed a band and in a couple of years she is going to be huge. Think 'Justin Beiber' but female.

And I am having a hard time dealing with this.

I had carried on through life these past few years safe and secure in the knowledge that my extended family was basically inconsequential - a few suits, a panel beater, an electrician. Nothing to sing and dance about.

Now however I am faced with the very real possibility of being overshadowed by a cousin that sings and dances.

I am small and petty and I want her to fail. And these feelings of jealously are concerning me.

So I am asking you guys how you deal with your mediocrity. Does it not rack you that your lives are a great big nothingness? How do you handle your inconsequentiality?

I suggest you do as I do and focus on the less talented.  My particular pinup person in that area is Steve Jobs.  Pft, he's nothing compared to me.

In your case I suggest you focus on your cousin.  Whilst she's undoubtedly smarter than you, better looking than you, far more likely to havea relationship with a member fo the opposite sex than you and so on, at least she is...

Oh wait, even as a wannabe famous band person she does you over big time.

Perhaps it's time for you to consider the broader evelutionary ladder as your family.  Think of yourself as being sort of middleish on that, not quite up there with, say, the primates, but much much better than protozoa.

As for the original question, I am, so fuck off.

As for your cousin, root her, get her preggers and go halvies in the proffs.

SG has been hanging around the sheltered work shop by the look of it and is 100% correct. Use both ideas combined and you can't lose.

When she becomes famous, you can brag about having a famous relatives to everyone that's not in your family.  That's going to be far more people than people you can't boast to, even for a stereotypical wog family.

On the whole, therefore, you're coming out on top.

You might try trawling youtube.  Especially if you read the comments.  Try looking for ones by US citizens.

Now Nick, first off, you're a wog in a wog family - therefore someone will always be better than you, depending on who tells the story - stop stressing about that, it doesn't matter.

And I've listened to some of your works, and they're good stuff.
But you do need to work on the titles of your pieces.

Seriously, using such titles as 'Fuck in F minor', 'Shit in D minor', 'Up Yours in D minor' is hardly going to endear you to the classical music world. (although spending a lot of time in minor's may endear you to the more paedophillic amongst them)

However, the advantage of having a cousin who does the singing and dancing, is that you can use the family connection to write material for her, and make a mint off the songs if she's successful, and once the hit tunes are written, you won't have to do jack shit, other than collect the cash - BINGO!

So start working on some hot pop stuff in your Cuzzin's style, dude! if you need lyrics, I'm happy to help!

I actually AM the best in my field - my current field being "crazy old bat, creatin' trouble everywhere I go". 

I can't understand this intense desire you all have to be famous. Far better to be quietly rich.  8-)
