Remember how terrible Australia had become under Howard?  How horridly racist we were, how our intolerance levels had reached such a point poor Indians culdn't walk teh streets at night?

Unless the names "Harpreet Singh, 25, Gurpreet Singh, 25, and Harpreet Kaur Bhullar" and the words "Indian nationals" are somehow a product of Australia then it seems to me that a bunch of Indians killed another Indian for $2,000 in wages the Indian had ripped them off.

How about you all fuck off back to your own country and take your issues with you, we've got enough genuine issues of our own over here.

Yes I do. The way refugees were used as political pawns was shocking. Abbott is still trying on occasionally, but it seems to have taken a back seat somewhat. Sadly, the system is still damaged thanks to the intolerance built up by the Howard government.

Well we do actually need skilled workers. They are better letting people in who can contribute to the economy in a good way. I think adapting the UK border policies are a good way to start. The UK categorise you based on your studies and qualifications and whether you would fill a gap in their job vacancies. NZ also have the same thing - they have a list of required jobs on their website and if you are suitably qualified and are prepared to stay there for 2 years to help then they let you in (providing you have money and no criminal record). That way they get a rural doctor for 2 years, you get money, everyone is happy. Obviously if you are not a 'skilled worker' then it is harder to get into the country...

Don't we already have a system where we have jobs that are on the 'needed' list and we give first priority to those who could fill a vacancy?

And it's not so easy when it comes to doctors and other medical professionals as they need to retrain once they're here. I think it would be hard to say what jobs are needed above others and what level of qualification is acceptable .

Aren't all basic medical degrees the same? I know two people at work, one from India and one the UK who came here about 3 years ago and they were allowed to start work straight away at the hospital with no problems. And they are still working here. I guess maybe when it comes to specialities such as surgery then they need to have the proper Australian equivalent in training??? Great, another thing to go and Google....

Working in a lab would be different to working with patients. And I'm fairly sure many specialties need to pass Australian tests to be able to practise (they may not go through all the basic stuff, but they definitely have to prove their competence)

They don't work in a lab they are in the pediatrics ward at the childrens hospital....

Maybe you can ask your dad this and report back? Saves me googling it.  :-P

Well, I know that psychiatrists have to pass an exam to qualify. It's not the same exam as all people who do all their training here, but they still need to do it.

And google it, for all I know I could be wrong (even with what I just wrote). But I thought australia had fairly strict standards when it comes to health.

It looks like NZ, UK, Ireland, Canada and USA can pretty much get in by doing minimal testing and can start work straight away....everyone else goes the long way round I guess.
