Crocodile tears?
« on: February 12, 2011, 12:15:42 AM »

Any of you who saw our PM forcing back tears in parliament as she delivered her speech about Queenslands latest round of natural disasters may well have been excused for displaying a little scepticism.  On the day before parliament was to resume many media commentators, whilst pontificating upon what might transpire upon the floor, were drawing comparisons between the way Julia Gillard and Anna Bligh handled themselves in front of the cameras.

The general consensus was that Julia lacked emotion, she was wooden, she lacked the media presence and authenticity displayed by Anna.

Then, on cue, Julia appears in parliament and, in complete contrast to the behaviour she's shown throughout her entire career, allows herself to choke back tears in front of a national television audience.

Was anyone else as appalled as I was?

Par for the course, isn't it?

Though, although we automatically assume it to be a lie, for all we know she was upset by the floods.  Or her cat got run over that morning.

Apalled? Why? At least she's trying. I know Tony is also trying, but its a different kind of trying.

Don't get me wrong, I am not now, nor have I ever been, a fan of the Mad Monk's. I'm not saying that her performance was better or worse than his was on the day. I'm just passing comment about the fortuitousness of the timing of Julia's singular display of emotiion in a career spanning 20 years or more.

I thought it was particularly cynical and obviously scripted. She was probably thinking about having to find a real job after the next election.

They were obviously crocodile tears and it's awkward to watch but she's not the first politician to do this. I remember during the bushfires seeing John Brumby display real emotion at the scene of the fires and then Kevin Rudd the next day putting it on during an interview with sunrise. They all do it.

I think it shows what a quick study she is. Excellent work, and by all accounts convincing. She'd make a good PM.

Ms. Gilllard (who is patently gay and in a sham relationship with a man is is also patently gay but that's another story... I mean why the fuck can't they just be openly gay, like anyone gives a shit in 2011, anyway, I digress) will only ever be a PM in title only. She's not a PM's arse, even though she has arse enough for all of the past four PMs.

I tend to agree. I'm not sure who is PM material among the current pickings.

I guarantee you people will care. The majority of Australians are still very much opposed to gay marriage.

I think that's a pretty extreme generalisation to make too just because he is a hairdresser (as so many gay men are) and she is ugly (as so many lesbians are.)

As for the crocodile tears thing well I'm sure you'd be getting upset too if people were starting to call you wooden and the premier of the state was upstaging you. Her tears were genuine even if they weren't about the subject matter.

Hmmm...a replacement for:
?

I somehow doubt that homophobia is as small as you say.

Come come Thal. The only homophones left are old people and country bumpkins - and in twenty years the old people will be dead.

"Old people" sounds nothing like "country bumpkins"

The Pope flat out stated that homosexuals are a greater threat to mankind than global warming...are you saying that only old people and country bumpkins are Catholics (or believe global warming poses a threat, I guess)?
