second year, but we didn't do micro much in 1st year so it's really 'basic' apparently. And then if you want to chose it as an elective for 3rd year then that is the harder one. I find it easy, it's just the having to remember EVERY species names that is hard...

I dont think we covered cryptococcus, as 2/3 of the lectures were on bacterial stuff not fungi and they never give you enough info!

And yet, isn't it often the case on House that it was some totally rare fungus only found in central Asia and if the patient reckoned they hadn't been there, they were lying?  And the only reason they even think of that is because House had an afflatus somehow related to whatever personal side-story is playing out?

Um, sorry.  Good thing you have such an excellent memory.   :-)

Amusingly we've never done any fungi with our micro. It's just been bacteria (of which we were given about 20or more genus to learn with some having 1 or two species as well...grr). And viruses are 'taught' by the infectious disease department. I say 'taught' because their pracs consist of copying down posters which is NOT a prac. Bitches.

I'm currently learning me some immunology.

Amusingly we've never had to learn lists of genera.... microbiology was more like the life and times of bacteria, fungi, viruses... how they plumage and rape the unwilling, including ourselves... and how they spread their genetic juices...

I may have made it sound more interesting that it actually was.

Hahaha, nah, we do all of that too, be you need to learn specifics...like, certain things will have certain characteristics that other species won't have. Like, you need to know staph aureus is coagulase positive which allows it to do such and such...the lectures we learnt it under were "medically important bacteria"...fun times.

We also have heaps of STI causing things in there. They were funny for reasons I forget now.

i see.. we didnt learn that in lectures but we most certainly did it in pracs...

i hope they dont examine us on that because i most certainly am not going through the bazillion different microorganisms and learning their operational differences

well i fucked that up. They had 40(!!!) MC questions on fungi, and nearly every one was a case study, like so and so has a rash what is it and you had to know the species. The problem is they all had the same options, so obviously some would be the same fungi, but that seems a bit misleading in terms of trying to match the cause with the symptoms....as more than one case study would have had "different" causes/answers...

Always answer in this order: acfbde and repeat. Never fails.

Yeah I did a random selection, like for the ones I didn't know I did a for the first one, b for second, etc. They are 100% wrong, but they take marks off for not writing an answer I think, so it was better to guess than leave it. Guess I'll be repeating micro next year though...

I thought it was supposed to be, you get a better probability of getting answers right if you just pick one letter for all of them

what, the "when in doubt, pick c" option? I tried that too, but all the "c" options were the same answer so they probably did it like that on purpose to stop people just marking "c" the whole way down the form. haha

they pissed me off too, as the lecturers were all like, "there will only be a max of 20 questions MC on the exam". Yeah...didn't look like it. I prefer S/A or the definitions ones rather than MC cos there is more chance of it being right. Meh. I'm thinking of taking a year off next year anyway. Haven't decided yet. Pissing off overseas for a while seems really good right now.

i prefer MC > SA

coz at least with MC the answers right there, so I don't need to remember as much when i study

as in i recognise the answer when i see it, but if you ask me, i'm just like :|
