It will take money from the mining companies. The mining companies don't think that is a good idea. I guess they are threatening to take their business elsewhere if they are forced to pay tax. Perhaps the government should take a look at stripping these companies of their mining and land rights and taking over the mining operations.

The Australian government can afford to shake up to mining industry to a degree, because there aren't all that many countries the industry can go to instead.  Australia happens to be the world's second largest producer of iron ore, for example (behind China), and happens to be geographically close to China, which Australian companies sell it to.

Brazil, the 3rd biggest producer only currently produces a bit more than half of what Australia does, and it costs more to ship it from China all the way from there.  And if the industry left Australia for Brazil, they'd have to spend several years building up operations in Brazil.

According to the unions, the industry is fucking off to Russia, because they produce between one fifth and one quarter the amount Australia does.

Can someone please explain in plain English how this mining tax is about? All I'm hearing is 'It'll be the endz of the worldz!" (unions) or "It is bloody epic!" (KRudd), but nothing about what it will actually do or why it is bad/good.

Thanks.

Earn more than the bond rate you get taxed at a higher rate.

Bad thing is that it applies only to one sector.  Why, for instance, does it not apply to banks which have a much lower level of risk whilst it applies to mining companies that make smaller profits (although still huge numbers) after having undertaken much more risk to get projects up and running.

I don't see Labor doing anything that will trigger a plunge.

Ha! Well then! Julia's had an effect on the market. ALP tightened in to 1.38 on Centrebet.com and the Coalition blowing out to 2.95!

Well August 21 has been declared, hows the market looking? Centrebet.com has had the ALP come in yet again to 1.23, and the Coalition blowing like an absolute gale out to 3.90. The Coalition are value yet again. They won't win, but its in no way a mismatch as the markets have it.

I think it's time for Julia to start talking about taxing religious entities.  Though possibly not before the election.

Or his representatives on earth. I'm more upset about them getting access to kids in supposedly secular public schools for half an hour a week.

Theory is they do charitable works with everything they earn so all that would happen if they paid tax is that money would be wasted on accountants justifying tax refunds to teh full value of their income.

But does building churches and stuff count as charitable work?

So if I was to launch a new political party, the Australian Anarchist Union of Trade Unionism, could I claim that the building of my party headquarters is a charitable action?

I'm going with no.

So why is a church treated vastly different to a political party?
