The Punter Test
« on: June 03, 2010, 04:08:17 AM »

With a short while to go before the Penrith by election here's a record of relevant info for testing Hank's assertion the bookies call it correctly as well as teh early call on teh Federal election where Fadey is apparently in some trouble (acc to the bookies):

Quote from: http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/opinion/kerr-ang-boom/story-e6frgdk6-1225874720857
Better, take a seat

THERE'S a new way to lose your gambling dollar. It's the first line market in political wagering, Centrebet enthuses. In other words, you can bet on Labor to win the next federal election by giving up 4.5 seats start to the Coalition. Centrebet's Neil Evans reckons this would be compelling for punters. "It's just like in the AFL or NRL, where teams either give up or receive a start," Evans says. "Serious political punters, they will have the fine-tooth comb out straight away, picking through all the key marginal seats around the country to see where and how much ground the Coalition can make up."

The mystery is why it has taken so long to reach this pinnacle of Australian democracy-commerce. Centrebet has Labor a $1.43 favourite, with the Coalition a $2.72 outsider.

NSW Premier Kristina Keneally might like to know that the prices for the June 19 Penrith by-election are: $1.20 Stuart Ayres (Liberal); $4.25 John Thain (Labor); $11 Suzie Wright (Greens).

Stuart Ayres to win Penrith is possibly the safest bet in the entire world. Relatively good value as well, considering some of the sure things in the 2007 election (Alexander Downer in Mayo for instance) paid 1.0001 or something prohibitive like that.

Labor appear to have drifted in betting, not enough to change my prediction, but we'll continue to see where the money heads.

Election betting is the easiest money you can make if you do it right.

Well there's a different "doing it right" with election betting then there is with sports betting.

Besides, I said the easiest.

Er. Doing it right would simply imply choosing the right bet.

There really isn't anything else to do right. You either get it right, or wrong.

Hence, you're talking shit.

Thanks :)

And you get to the right choice by researching and looking for the value. Assessing the situation, looking at the risk vs reward. You should know all this, you play poker apparently.

Poker is very different...

You lack of understanding is probably why you don't do so well! Poker is about people more than anything else.

LOL, of course if it were poker the "situation" would be the people you were playing against you fucking dope.

Keep it up champion, your efforts across the board this evening are quite staggering :)

Precisely.

So it's nothing like poker at all.

You previous analogy is ridiculous and stupid. We all know it, but I bet you still won't admit it.

Well the whole thing wasn't applied to poker, but anything to try and take a dig, right? :D

But you leapt on anyway, and I shot you down like the single engine shitbox you are. Perhaps you should concentrate on the things YOU say before you concentrate on the things I say :)

Well on the back of the hulabaloo of the Mining Super Tax, the money is coming in!

ALP out from 1.43 in the article to 1.49 now
Coalition in from 2.72 to 2.53

If you think the Coalition will win and you fancy a flutter, get on now, they'll just keep coming in, I don't see Labor doing anything that will trigger a plunge.

Can someone please explain in plain English how this mining tax is about? All I'm hearing is 'It'll be the endz of the worldz!" (unions) or "It is bloody epic!" (KRudd), but nothing about what it will actually do or why it is bad/good.

Thanks.
