Israeli commandos attack Gaza relief fleet: 10 reported killed
http://www.smh.com.au/world/israeli-commandos-attack-gaza-relief-fleet-10-reported-killed-20100531-wq8y.html?autostart=1

"Israeli private channel 10 television reported that Israeli marine commandos had opened fire after being attacked with axes and knives by a number of the passengers on board the aid ships. It did not give the source of its information. The station did not say whether the dead and injured were passengers or members of the Israeli navy."

Serkan Nergis from the Foundation of Humanitarian Relief (IHH), an Istanbul-based Islamist charity, earlier told AFP by telephone: "Our friends on the ship told us that two people were killed and around 30 others were wounded on the Mavi Marmara ship."

"Turkish television station NTV reported at least 10 people were killed, according to Israeli news website Haaretz.com."

"The Free Gaza organisation said on Twitter their lawyer in the Israeli city of Haifa said 10 people had been killed."

So, if you don't have a story, make it up? Well, someone did say "10 dead" on Twitter after all. Third hand. The most believable one, the IHH seems to have been overshadowed by a bigger toll from the unbiased "Free gaza" organisation.

Jeez

So, one should just make it up? Why don't they a) report an incident has occurred where people may have been killed, then when some fact have been established, report the facts. What is the problem with this approach?

It seems to be extreme laziness to report a number that some said that someone else said that they had seen on some twitter feed. That ain't news. It's fiction telling.

I agree. Journalists have a lot to answer for. The shit they publish before getting all the facts is ridiculous. I don't understand the need to either make up numbers or rely upon Twitter etc. It's like quoting from Wiki in a uni essay.

It's a timing issue.

It is more important to get some information out quickly, than to wait for hours to make sure it's all correct.

It seems to be extreme laziness to report a number that some said that someone else said that they had seen on some twitter feed. That ain't news. It's fiction telling.

It's not laziness. They've reported the source of their information, and it's up to the public to digest it on that basis. Nothing at all wrong with it.

Yes, they are. And validly so.

Reliability isn't an issue at all if the media outlet reports where it came from. The reader can make their own decisions. WE ARE NOT STUPID.

So, that would make facebook the biggest news site in the world. And all the reporters are freelance 14 year olds. Brilliant.

I'll stick with the more traditional sources thanks...like Sunrise on 7.

Why wouldn't people actually experiencing a situation first hand be a valid source?

There was no inking of a 'first hand' story. The closest to it appeared to be the IHH, who reported 2 deaths.

Do you honestly believe that about the general population?

I guess you could say I'm making my own decision about that statement.

What do you mean "what if".

Miranda Devine uses my ideas all the time. She's been doing it for years.
