I don't think that the voters not knowing is particuarly an issue. It isn't a betrayal to his voters, just his family.

Of course it is. If I can't stand gays, it is my prerogative not to vote for one. If you have told me you're straight, then you have lied, and I have been deceived. I want my vote back.

That's only in your opinion. For a lot of people, that is a lie. I might not agree with them, but I do believe in their right to have their own view, and the exercise their vote in the way they wish the exercise it.

Well he played strongly on being a family man. People might feel a guy sneaking off to a gay bath house doesn't quite have the family values one would expect from a married man with kids.

Funny thing is, I suspect he may well have been a good husband/father. No-one seems to be saying he wasn't. I guess we'll know when the family gets over the shock and either provides a united front, or splits.

People do hold family values very highly, and this could well have played a large part in people decision to vote for him. I do wonder if maybe he should not have quit, and simply put his seat up for re-election (can you do that?). That way the people in his electorate would have their say. It may well be that they prefer a double-life minister.

When did he get married? And where? As if it was before homosexuality was legalised (Adi, HELP!) then of course you would keep it a secret? Plus he might not have realised until later that he was "gay" though the right thing to do would have been to tell his wife and kids about it, and I'm sure something could have been worked out?

And regarding the election - if he is the majority seat holder and quits wont there be a re-election anyway?

I hate hearing this shit in the news. He can do whatever he wants in his spare time (although using a government car is asking for it, a little bit). The news keeps calling it a "sex scandal". That word seems to be thrown around a lot lately. This is hardly a sex scandal. I really don't see what the issue is...is it that he's gay? Is it that he visited a gay club yet has a family? Is it that he used a government car to do his personal business?

Either way, people should just shut the fuck up and get over themselves.

If he was "happily married" and his wife/kids liked him then that is better than most people have. They are only makeing a big deal over it as he is a pollie as many other men/women cheat on their partners too, and do other worse things like beat the shit out of them as well. And what are the "expected" family values? People have different definitions of this and I know GC will say that if both partners agree on it then it it okay (eg: sleeping with other people). And it shoudlnt matter that he is "gay". Though as you said people seem to have the traditional idea that marriage is forever and has to be between a man and woman or it is wrong...

Of course politicians' personal lives are no one's business but their own- the same as ordinary citizens' alcohol consumption, driving habits and internet activities are no business of the government's. Once politicians stop trying to dictate everyone's personal choices, they can expect their own private lives to be kept out of the papers. I've got no sympathy for him.
