Splintering wouldn't be an issue if it was made properly, same as with decent wood products today.  And...what else are you going to make them out of way back when, which would remain cheap and affordbale.

What I'd like to know, though, is if the person that made them was a specialised dildo carver, or they did general woodwork, and this was a custom job.
