Where did you read that stat, GC? That sounds ridiculously low...
It was something Elizabeth Broderick said in my interview with her.

Along with, “We don’t value, in economic terms, caring work, so it sits outside the retirement income system, and I think that’s a major problem, particularly for women who do 90% of the childcare and 70% of the unpaid work in this country.

"Say, for example, you’ve had your first baby. The country has basically said, ‘Well you know, you’re the woman, you will leave paid work to look after your child because that’s what being a good mother is.’ Then if you go back into paid work when your kids grow up a little, you’ll probably go back into part-time work and, because of the problems of getting part-time work at your skill level, chances are you’ll deskill, and because of the issues around pay inequity you’re paid less.”

I clearly know that, but that's not being a mother...

And regardless of that, times still does have to be taken off for the initial stages.
What does being a mother entail, Books?

Because this is a fact.

It is not, not all women are suited for the maternal thing.

Dumping a child with a baby sitter/carer 24/7 is not being a mother. There needs to be some kind of love/caring/nurturing thing going on there, which, as i've said, is not suited to all women.

I returned to work when each of my babies were 7 months old - too young for separation anxiety and old enough to take to someone else - and we were lucky to have extremely good childminders through Family Day Care.  They still send the kids birthday and Christmas cards.

I had to work part-time and over the years this led to serious de-skilling.

Ultimately I lost that job because I blew the whistle on them, but if that hadn't happened I would have been offered a redundancy package based on my inability to actually do the work, due to absolutely NO ongoing training.  It could have been arranged for me, but it wasn't.  So, I blame the employer.  They simply failed to take my need for ongoing training into account. And this happens everywhere.

And if Rudd really did say that, fuck him.  Not that I would.  But people who say - or even think - like that need lining up against the wall and shooting to kill.

I really hope he has cause to come near my uni during the course of the next few years... 75% of the history postgrads are FEMALE, and we have a very convenient wall... one of the young ladies had a baby two weeks ago, and was forced to take a leave of absence because the only way to get paid time off to have a baby is to say that you're sick, and of course we all know that pregnancy is an illness.... >:(

Centrelink does the same thing.  A pregnant woman on Newstart allowance gets swapped to sickness allowance for the last three months.  Well, possibly Centrelink has managed to enter the 20th century since I left, but as we are now in the 21st that still leaves them way behind.

Of course pregnancy is an illness!  You vomit, don't you?

It is not, not all women are suited for the maternal thing.

All women don't need to be for it to be a fact. Just enough.

It's suited to enough of them for it to be a valid generally accepted truth. :)

The end.

Well, how could she?  I imagine finding a child carer for YOU would have been well nigh impossible.  :-P

So sorry to disappoint :-P

Only if it's an evil parasite - i.e. you in your mother's womb.

My mum went back to work after she had me. She couldn't after she had my brother cos he had separation anxiety. Mum used to work for bosch, which was/is like 15 mins from my nan's house, so she'd drop me off there and go to work, but my brother wouldn't stop crying so mum quit.
