That is a fascinating article.

In my Women's Studies class, this issue was discussed. They reckoned that it wasn't a form of abuse by men against women because the women themselves wanted to wear the burqa - indeed, many of them loved it.

I debated that it was only because the subjugation of these women had been going on for so long that they considered it normal, therefore they didn't actually realise that it was an inequality.

I think it's a deeply disturbing, disgraceful and mysoginistic custom.

On the other hand, I don't think it is the job of the state to tell people what to wear.

It is their choice, yes, and many of them are greatly in favour of it.  The same is often said about female genital mutilation.

Sometimes you just have to tell people to stop complaining about the nanny state, because you really do know better than them.
