Meaning changing words are often missed by spell checkers, when the wrong spelling is a real word in its own right. It's/its, you're/your, they're/their/there, or counsel/council, etc. And you just said that it was pointless for a computer to do it. A spell checker *is* a computer.

or if you've just type the wrong word when someone is talking to you at the same time... I often type type 'dog' in the the middle of a completely unrelated sentence because someone has asked me if the dog has been fed while I was typing, with worrying results depending on the subject...
Also, grammar can change meaning drastically..

Depends on it's context wolfie. On this site, it's just pedantic, but in proper pieces of work, definitely essential.

I hope that was intentional...

I think all the responses from those sensitive to this subject (Adi) indicate that it is very self indulgent indeed.

Surely the copy editor picks up important mistakes.  Apostrophe's you can more or les's get away with mo'st of the time, but if you you will be start words wrong put places fucked, for example.  And it does happen.

"Big too" does not mean the same as "too big".

That hurt my brain.

Oh, and it's essential. I missed the irony.

On another note, does anyone hate it when people say eye-or-nee instead of eye-ron-ee?

It would, but I've never heard it. Obviously, you have way too many bogans in your life.

No, it's an Americanism. It's like they can't get their tongues around the r. I've heard it a few times now (movies and TV).

The irony is that this is an incredibly self indulgent thread. Gawd Orlmightly...

It has come to my attention that no-one (except me) can pronounce "infrastructure" properly.  "Infastructure" hurts my delicate ears.  But then, I am a hot-house flower in these things.  8-)

Another thing I very recently learnt is that "leach" is the verb form of "leech" the noun.  I knew there was a difference, but not exactly what it was, obviously.  Thanks for pointing out my iggorance, Adi.

The thing is, Wolfie, that if you speak and spell correctly, people will pay more attention to what you are actually saying, and surely that's desirable, even for a counter-culture hero like yourself?

It's certainly true that correctly spelt and properly grammatical essays attract higher marks.  If you are going on to uni, I suspect this aspect of grammar will become more important to you.

Also, DEATH to anti-bumpers.  :-P

As I said to Adi (at some point, she had nothing to say), Language is like ettiquette, it all comes down to context. In my literature essays, I had as rigid grammar and spelling as anyone could care to accuse me of. However in a different context, rigid grammar and spelling Nazism is completely inapropriate. Like the internets. In the same way that using half a dozen forks and white napkins is inapropriate at the pub.

Actually anti- bumpers are the direct equivalent of spelling/ grammar Nazis on billboards and internet sites...
