Nobel peace prize won by professional public speaker

Does this prize have any credibility left? First Kofi Annan, now this guy who has contributed absolutely nothing to world peace. But he gives good speeches.

Has he even come through with any of his election promises yet? What were they? ???

It wasn't for his election promises, it was for advocating the worldwide eradication of nuclear weapons.

These things are always political. It's expedient to give it to him.

Meh.

Election promises has nothing to do with this. Just random musing on my parts.

And advocating..hmm..he still hasn't actually done anything, though? I mean, in a way, George W advocated the eradication of nuclear weapons too. He, however, was considerably less tanned.

I know it doesn't really need to be said, but "Advocated it while being the commander of the largest nuclear arsenal in the world".

Expedient, yes, but hardly constructive, which was the original point of the thing.

Um, by "constructive", you mean "making Alfred Nobel look less bad for working in the armaments industry"?

How is rewarding anyone for good work constructive? It's acknowledging something that's already happened. It's hardly an incentive for future achievements, and nor would its non-existence be a disincentive. The next Nelson Mandela is not going to think "Gee, well, if I won't get a Nobel Prize for it, it's hardly worth freeing a gazillion slaves or curing cancer or eradicating fart smells" or whatever it is these people do.

Exactly. Because the best way to do that was by funding activities that would actually benefit the world.

The original idea was to support continuing efforts, which is clearly not the case here. All this will do is ease pressure on US government finances and provide more positive publicity to a man who is quite capable of generating it without outside help, or in fact, having to actually do anything.

He's a black guy who assuages white guilt really really nicely and just positively show how equal everyone is in the USA.

Plus he's so urbane and educated and well dressed in a non pimping kind of way he's practically white so he's acceptable whereas a real nigra like Jesse Jackson would never get voted in coz he might legalise black dicks in white chicks regardless of consent or something.
