No, I just reread them. She's saying that she cried - she just broke up her bf because he didn't ask her to marry him, so she is now out partying, probably to make him jealous and make him realise what he missed out on.

Probably because they know the answer will be no, especially if a long time has passed with no murmurs from him... so instead she keeps hoping, and he never asks, and then she gets all depressed and eventually ends it.

She could have saved herself the trouble by asking him originally, when she felt the time was right.

I'm happy to get married but I think it's a largely irrelevent institution in the modern context so if I've been in a relationship for a significant period of time and someone asks me, I'll happily do it, although I may not be so fast to do it myself.

Try again. She was in a relationship, and felt she was being stringed along and it was going nowhere. So then, she leaves, sees him one night when she's out having fun and says "uh huh, See this? You missed out. Sucked in." and moves on. Wonderful.
