Can no one see the detrimental effects of having your first port of call in a case of a medical emergency being a doctor that has been awake for up to 80 hours? No one is expected to make rational, reasonable thoughts under such circumstances, yet they are. And then people wonder why mistakes are made.
Interesting story time. In NSW an intern was driving home from a 2 day shift (or there abouts). They fell asleep at the wheel, crashed and died. All the interns went on strike to demand better conditions. Conditions were met (a maximum working time enforced, a place in the hospital to sleep when working overtime etc) and it has helped issues somewhat, from what I know.
