I mean, teenagers would be probably more attracted to the Chaser than most because it offers criticism on the society which restricts them so much...

That and the fact that Andrew is hot.

That and the fact that Andrew is hot.

Perhaps for some. But that could apply to anyone, not just teenagers.

But don't you see? The fact that Emos think they need to do this is the problem!! I'm not saying they have problems and that it's momentous, I'm just saying that the fact that they're around and feel that they need to injure themselves to get attention is a problem which deserves a little attention. Like psychiatric help.
I like the way you look down on those that are merely three years younger than you RoryAlice.

It's not the age part I'm looking down on. It's the 'I'll-pretend-I-understand-Chaser-humor-because-it's-cool' attitude.

There's nothing confounding about sketches involving candid camera style pranks. Any eight year old could easily 'get' and laugh at this shit.

i know what you mean, but what I'm saying is that they wouldn't actually understand what was going on, just laugh at the costumes. Which isn't really getting it.

Alice meet Maj. You'll find she hates everything they've done from about the start of War on Everything season 1 but especially from 2 onwards.

Chaser's key demographic these days are the tweens. Of course they understand what's going on. There is no subtle satirical point being made here that is only to be understood by those that watch SBS news and read The Australian. What's hard to understand about a sketch involving guy taking a dump outside a newsagent?

But that's just one sketch! What about the thingo in Italy which read Boys Inside? Most tweens don't know what pedophelia is; they know it as 'stranger danger' and would probably become quite confused if you were to explain that the stranger can become the parish preist. What I mean is, you can take any one part of practically anything an claim in only broadcasts base, childish humor.

See how much harder things become when you have to edit in commas yourself? that's what Facebook does to you.

I also think that being politically detached isn't necessarily a negative thing; the rejection of formalized political process is something which could be the start of revolution. We had to reject the wrong process before we discovered a new one, so surely the turn-away of our generation from politics could be interpreted as a search for a more effective government process, couldn't it?

No.  A turn away from the current political system in search for a better one is very different from turning away from politics.

No, compared to generations who just accepted whatever situation they happened to be in.

Is that not what they are doing?  Vague complaints by people who resent the obligation to vote don't count as progress.

As for emos...there are always those who feel the need to "rebel" by conforming to whatever rebellious stereotype they are told to.  Emos aren't really anything new.

I read that as some kind of variant on the grasshopper expression

Yeah...it was a bit vague, but actually, I kind of like it that way.

But you have to do one in order to do the other, and is it not possible that the former proceeds the latter without the latter in sight? It isn't quite what has happened in the past, but that doesn't make it impossible.

no, I don't think that's what they're doing. I think that the whole Emo subculture is an avenue in which to pursue discontent with society. Emos don't give solutions, but they do provide an alternative to mainstream culture-- which really, considering mainstream culture in Australia is so broad, is an achievement in itself.

No, you don't do one to do the other.  Looking for a new system requires you to be interested, not apathetic about politics.

Pursuing discontent with society is what every wannabe rebellious group dresses the same to do, emos aren't much different.  As for an alternative to mainstream culture being an achievement, c'mon, you get all sorts going out of their way to be something society at large wont understand that they can claim persecution over.
