I don't understand why people get so obsessed!
All these people didn't know him, he hasn't made music for years, he wasn't doing anything remarkable, why the big loss to them? (Obviously I acknowledge that this is a big loss to his friends and family because they're relatives and close to one another etc) But ffs, it shits me how people get so worked up over someone they never knew.

Yes, I'm sure if some celebrity I admire passes away (though no one comes to mind), I'll be upset and saddened by their passing, but not grieving and in a mourning process. There's more important things going on in the world that need worrying about.

Also, they're acting as though he invented music. Ok, he did some good stuff which was at the vanguard of pop music and dance for a while there, but he did not invent bloody electricity or something.

Paris's few words affected me, too, but only because I felt so appallingly sorry for her, having to share her (obviously genuine) grief with the world.

Ugh, the cult of the celebrity really gets to me. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

That's what's annoying me too =/

I wouldn't say ANY of my favourite artists have even created a dint in the history of music. My favourite artists are disposable, they make their mark on fans, not music in general.

Anyway, to the fans grieving heavily, it's only a loss of a media persona to them, not a loss of a person.

I understand what you're saying though but it is a very intimate thing to have someone singing in your ears. Music is generally very introspective and it's easy to fell like you really know someone after listening to their music for a good 20 odd years.

Meh, I have purposely avoided all commercial networks, because their version of 'news' leaves a lot to be desired... and when it goes, "MJ, more MJ, fans respond to MJ, someone killed MJ, MJ's family reacts to accusations, now there's some sport, maybe some weather, and more MJ" I just want to hack my TV to pieces.

It's bliss to ignore it all.

I haven't watched or read a single news story about MJ since the day they announced his death, and that was because I was at work and couldn't help it.

I do sympathise with people though. I know I've had a cry about John Lennon dying, 20-odd years after his death. Because I'm a massive loser. :|
I'd probably cry if Paul died, but I certainly wouldn't go to some wank-fest memorial service for him.
Although I'd buy the DVD if it was something like Concert For George, which is fucking epic and makes me cry.

Concert for George is unreal.
I would have gone to that if I was in the UK at the time. It's a bit different to any of the other shitty memorial services though.

I'd rather 24 hour coverage of Michael Jackson's death.

What was it like when John died? Not being alive at the time and never having met anyone who cared I've always wanted to know. Did they have as much media coverage as now with MJ?

Lucky we both get our dreams fulfilled then, isn't it.

It was terrible, x-x. You couldn't log onto Twitter without being inundated by people mourning the loss of the great man, and Graham Kennedy was spreading this simply HORRIBLE rumour that Harrison Ford had died, too. Fortunately that turned out to be untrue. But yeah, I was devastated. I remember I didn't play my PS3 for at least two days, I was so shattered, and I had the Beatles on permanent rotation on my iPod shuffle.

Sad times :'(

I'm going to guess there was ten times more media coverage...

And I hate to sound like a pretentious 'I LOVE THE BEATLES COS THEY LIKE, SO TOTALLY CHANGED THE WORLD. RESPECT THEM!' twat, but it would have been a lot more well derserved too...

It was devastating. I killed myself because life just wasn't worth living anymore.
