The 'Make a Realistic Wish Foundation' sketch
« on: June 04, 2009, 11:38:41 AM »

Okay, so everyone's having a whinge about this in some way or another.
Saw this article this morning: http://www.smh.com.au/news/entertainment/tv/2009/06/04/1243708544308.html

Quote
Angry viewers have slammed a skit on The Chaser's War on Everything about terminally ill children, calling for the show to be axed.

A father of a terminally ill seven-year-old boy said he had always been a fan of The Chaser but was shocked it would make light of the foundation, which his family had been involved with.

"I will now have to go and accompany my wife who is presently consoling our son in his bedroom about his pending fate and agonising death which this show did nothing but exacerbate the issue,'' he wrote after the show aired.

He said he would actively try to have the taxpayer-funded show cancelled.

Okay so, what does everyone think?

In regards to the skit, I thought it was funny, but thought the last line about "they're going to die anyway" was a *little* bit too far, slightly harsh. But at the end of the day, they can pretty much do what they want and I doubt the ABC will axe them over one skit.

The guy in the article who said the sketch upset his 7 year old child, he's an idiot for letting a 7 year old watch the show anyway. They would be only just beyond kindergarten, if they got upset because of the sketch, that's the childs parents fault, they shouldn't have let him watch it.

I just posted this on a news story where everyone was having a big cry about it:

Quote
I think everyone needs to calm down.
Whether you like it or not, it's gone to air, was enjoyed by many and the ABC won't axe the show. Get used to it.

I think everyone is also missing the point. The sketch was NOT making fun of terminally ill kids. It was making fun of the concept of a charity.

This happens every time the Chaser does a "controversial" stunt/sketch. People are too focused on being outraged at the first thing they can get their hands on because they're so bored with their own lame lives.

At the end of the day, they're not hurting anyone, it's all in good fun and all the whingers need to get a life and shut up.

I think that guy has nothing to complain about and is an idiot.

The show's rated M for god's sake.

Yeah I agree with x-x, if you let your 7 year old watch a show rated M for people 15+, it's your own fault.

Last night I thought the sketch wasn't too funny because it seemed to be a way just to shit stir and was 'uncalled for' (as most of the content on The Chaser is usually topical so I figured they were desperate for content) but now I've slept on it, I realise that's the whole point of the show anyway.

As if the ABC will cancel The Chaser anyway. I was talking to my Dad about this last night, and he reckons the reason why they decided to do another season of WoE was because TV executives probably begged them. Even if this isn't the case, as if the ABC would cancel their second highest rating show anyway, when there's only 8 episodes left.

Yeah, I gotta say people are overreacting.

So okay, it might be a bit of a sore spot and a bit close to home for people who know kids who have terminal illnesses but it's not like The Chaser have a thing against those kids or they think the Make a Wish Foundation is a waste of money.

By giving a stick, it's blatantly obvious that it's a joke. And if people can't see that, then they need to lighten up. Unless terminal illnesses also kill your sense of humour.

:-o OMG! THAT IS SO OUT OF LINE!

I am outraged! First the chaser's level of humour has just managed to lower to that of below gutter level and now it seems like their fans have decided to copy such an unhumourous and disgusting line.

I'm not watching this show ever again.

I think this would have been funnier if I was a noob...

I didn't even think it was a big deal when I saw it...normally I can tell when something will get made a big deal out of the next day and all. Just seemed like any other skit to me. Fuck me people are sensitive. And of course they find the father of a seven-year-old kid who has a terminal disease to comment on it...that guys a prick, he says he was a big fan of the Chaser. So...he was fine with when they made fun of all this stuff that didn't relate to him, but as soon as they make a joke about something close to home he wants the show axed. Fucking idiot.

Not surprised to see people on here agree with me, of course :P.

When I saw it, I didn't think anything of it until the last line that Chris delivered. I knew it'd get complaints because there's too many softcocks out there.

They ARE going to die anyway, geez >_>. It's not like they came out and said "we want sick kids to die" >_>. The whole skit was very tongue in cheek anyway, people seem to have forgotten that this is a comedy show. Not all types of comedy have to fit into the thin line of 'acceptable taste' in society. Dark comedy is always nice.
