« on: June 01, 2009, 01:23:55 AM »

20 years ago I was a sudent protesting in support of those in Tiananmen Sq.

Just had a big chat with a guy I haven't spoken to since about 1990 who reminded me.

Long time.

Depends who was catering, I suppose.  And only if he didn't have to stand near any smelly people.

Indeed.

Back then there were no real mobiles (those briefcase things don't count) but I had a pager.

Some Mez like hippy therefore assumed I was part of ASIO keeping watch over them all.

Quite amusing.  Probably helped by the fact I was in the Army Reserve at the time so I had teh military haircut at a time when longer hair was the norm.

Smelly people.

Go get a shower.

The video footage of the "tank man" or 'unknown rebel' is fairly etched into my memory as a defining historical snapshot from my youth, that and teh fall of the berlin wall, mostly because they were used a lot in the standard television adNational Nine News with brian henderson or maybe for sixty minutes? It probably was replayed in terms of news coverage in a similar way to the WTC towers collapsing.   I remembered feeling completely horrified and in awe and very confused by the concept of protest and military attacking their own citizens. (i was nine years old at the time of the protest and killings so i didn't grasp the reality of it all.

Call me ignorant, but what happened back in 1989?

I know a bunch of students were protesting and then got mowed down by the government or something.... but what were they protesting about?

Mr Corducci has links with those in the politburo and they suggest that "SG" should be quiet. Mr Corducci is in full support of China as many of garments are made there.

SG Army Reserve = Mirthitude

Discharged for disciplinary reasons.

Technically a mutual agreement for me to leave but I was a shocker.

I thought it was just the general lack of freedom stuff. Wiki tells me this also:

The protests were sparked by the death of pro-market, pro-democracy and anti-corruption official, Hu Yaobang, whom protesters wanted to mourn. By the eve of Hu's funeral, 100,000 people had gathered on the Tiananmen square. While the protests lacked a unified cause or leadership, participants were generally against the government's authoritarianism and voiced calls for economic change [1][2] and democratic reform[2] within the structure of the government. The demonstrations centered on Tiananmen Square in Beijing, but large-scale protests also occurred in cities throughout China, including Shanghai, which stayed peaceful throughout the protests.

Discharged for disciplinary reasons.

Meh, protesting students. It's like they have nothing better to do with their life.

When are they going to learn that protesting never works?

Hmmm...this site needs more Americans.  It's not a real discussion of Tiananmen Square without a bunch of Americans pontificating how that sort of thing would never happen in their country.

Not true. This case may not have changed many things, but it certainly did create awareness and highlight the issues on a world scale.

And public opinion (often shown through protesting students) was a great part of the Vietnam war.
