I must urge everyone to be alert and alarmed at this epidemic which I shall simply refer to as "gay lurking".

At the outset I must praise Matthew Mitcham for having the guts to be honest about his sexuality, it's probably costing him a few million dollars though!   :lol:

His current predicament adds more weight to the "Ian Thorpe is gay" lobby though, me included. Logically, if the incentive of false denial is great (i.e lots of $$$), then the probability of false denial occurring is also great.

And what about Rafael Nadal?  I mean, what sort of guy says that he doesn't enjoy the victory so much because the other guy cried.  Any ordinary bloke (yes I said ordinary you bunch of treehugging commies) would enjoy it more!

How would coming out of the closet in Ian Thorpe's case mean a loss of $$? I understand with some, for example that little munchkin Anthony Callea only came out of the closet after his career was plumetting (3 months after idol) and for him there was a risk of losing $$ because of the lucrative teenage girl market. Having said that though the gay market is also incredible lucrative- Kylie anyone??!

So where exactly did you miss the point that I am discussing corporate sponsorships, not the gay market in general?  The beginning, the middle or was it at the end?   :?

Um I'm pretty sure my reply was in response to that- I asked you how would Ian Thorpe and other supposed 'secret gays' coming 'out of the closet' affect their sponsorship deals??

I could be talking about anything really, I even confuse myself sometimes.

Yes, well I guess consumer demographics and corporate sponsorships are related.  I mean, they're only sponsoring someone because they appeal to a certain demographic in any case, so the distinction isn't all that important I guess.

The point is, are there any homosexuals out there who aren't out there (i.e "lurking") because they are afraid of losing and/or not obtaining corporate sponsorship money?  I, for one, am concerned about this potential lurking phenomenon, which may or may not be actually taking place.

The hypothesis is that since these lurkers are observing the case of poor Matt not being able to rake in the $$$s, in the same way that other slutchops and pot smokers can, are they actually denying that they are gay out of fear of losing money?

And are Ian Thorpe and Rafael Nadal some such lurkers?

My advice to Matt would be to take up muffdiving instead.

I don't think he's suggesting that these sports stars are actually being payed to stay in the closet but that they would not get as many endorsements or sponsorship deals were they to come out of it

I would suggest it has more to do with the fact that he is a diver and not that he is a homosexual. It's not a typically celebrated Australian sport like footy or cricket thus he would appeal to a less broad demographic. I didn't even know who he was and I had to google it- the olympics were awhile ago now and his glory from that has obviously faded

which is kinda the same as being paid to be in the closet. while they're not specifically saying here's some money to stay in the closet, it is implying that they'll get more money by staying in the closet.

No it's not. It's not as if Thorpie is much of a mans man- he is the typical metrosexual. It would not be hurting his image or his companys sponsors image were he to come out because I'm sure his target market (not being the typical blokey blokes) would not be put off by his sexual orientation.

Besides everyone knows he's gay anyway
