Barack Obama is finally President
« on: January 21, 2009, 06:54:43 AM »

Anyone get up in the middle of the night to watch the inauguration? I seem to have tuned in just in time for the lunch break...

I was hoping for a speech replay, but the text (oh, and video :-P ) is on the ABC website if anyone's interested.

Oh wait, he's giving a lunchtime speech...

Apparently two senators, Ted Kennedy and Robert Byrd, have collapsed during the lunch :|

Sucks that they have to have a bullet-proof enclosure for them to sit in... and that they're talking about Michelle Obama's fashion choices (it's 'her chance to shine' apparently...)

Reading through his speech, there are quite a few bits I like. It's going to be interesting to see how things will develop from here...

Edit (to avoid me quadruple-posting...): I love how they've got police motorbikes with side-cars! :-D

And what are the secret service dudes who walk next to the President's car supposed to do? They're not particularly 'secret' now that they're on international telly... They're massive dudes though, I guess they're supposed to crash tackle any would be assassins who make it past the 80 billion other police and defence force types lining the route?

I'm reading the speech now. It's really interesting, and it all feels so fresh and promising.  8-)

Edit: I also like the sideswipes at the outgoing Bush regime...

And those of us who manage the public's dollars will be held to account - to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day - because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government.

The speech was brilliant.
The coverage whilst Obama was walking with the motorcade was not so awesome due to the irritating commentary. I do not care that Michelle has said that the kids will be making their own beds. I do not care about what she will do for this country in terms of fashion and raising children. Stop fucking making it all about how she's such a house wife. She's a former lawyer. Yes, she did quit her job to stay at home with the kids, but when your husband is going to be President, what else are you going to do?

I'm still fascinated at how good a memory Obama must have. That speech must have been 20 minutes long, and he did the whole thing beautifully with no prompts.

Aw, what about when he was taking the oath and he forgot a few words and mixed some up? :-P I felt bad for him.

I stayed up till about 6am watching it, however, I went to bed before the parade.
Obama's speech was fairly impressive, but I the thing I remember best was the commentator saying that another President, a fair while ago, stood out in the freezing conditions and spoke for about 2 1/2 hours for his inauguration speech and hence caught pneumonia and died 2 months later.

I'm sure he practised it to death, but they do have those swish projecty autocue things, often on either side - that's why he looks so much from side to side during all his speeches. Or so I have gathered, anyway.

Tis likely untrue, but tis still a good story.

I always look for the autocue things but I can never seen them. They must be fancy hidden ones.
I just like the idea of him remembering stuff...that's hot.  8-)  :-P

Thing is I really like Obama and am excited that he is officially president but don't you get sick of the cheesy American patriotism?

All those dickhead Hollywood celebrities jumping on the bandwagon piss me off majorly too- fucking Will I Am, Beyonce and Usher singing at the inaugaration ball.
