Presidential Election 2008!
« on: October 03, 2008, 03:53:59 PM »

Anyone else been following the circus?

What do we think of the first presidential debate?  The vice-presidential debate today?  Palin in general?

It's going to be a very interesting next six weeks.

I taped the VP debate this morning and am 30 seconds into watching it now. I will report back soon...

I thought the presidential debate was fairly even. It was mainly on foreign affairs which is supposed to McCain's strong suit, so it will be interesting to see the next one, to see if Obama can perform better, as the commentators are suggesting he should.

Obama's polling figures have improved quite a bit in the last couple of weeks, the Palin factor seems to be waning. I watch with fascination.

Palin's a tool. After watching interviews and video snippets of her, I was a little disappointed. She back-tracks on her words, says stupid things, and believes that if a girl is raped by her father or brother or whatever, she should keep the child.

Agreed absolutely, her views are pretty drastic. But she did a lot better in the debate than I (and many others) had expected. Dunno how much of an effect it will have, but she did come across as confident.

Better.
Obviously that was expecting too much.

Palin's trying too hard to appeal to "hockey/soccer/lacrosse/lawnbowl moms". Thing is, Americans are stupid enough to buy it.

She's probably a lovely lady but she's trying to play a role she's not really suited to I reckon. If she'd just be herself and not try and spit out spin all the time she'd probably sound like less of a twat.

The woman could not be less suited for the job. At a time in the US when the most competent, experienced politicians with proven economic and foreign policy cred, McCain ignores responsibility and goes with a perceived 'vote winner'. Hopefully McCain gets fried in  the election for making such a poor and irresponsible choice.

It just working the 'woman in a big job' angle, taking advantage of Hillary Clinton not making it.....
Its pretty clear to anyone that can read and think proficiently that she's not qualified for the Job,...   but hey,... it's America...

McCain and Co, and the fact that they have a chance, scares me,...  however, I am cynical enough to beleive it either really wont make a difference who wins...... or it'll be rigged anyhow....

war in Russia anyone?

Palin,... she named a child 'track' for fucks sake.... who with any kind of judgement names a kid after something stepped on?

Palin's trying too hard to appeal to "hockey/soccer/lacrosse/lawnbowl moms". Thing is, Americans are stupid enough to buy it.

Therefore, she isn't trying too hard.

She's probably a lovely lady.

Course she is.  Any rabidly anti-choice, creationist bint put in cause she is of the same gender as Hillary has got to be a nice person.

Maybe. But do you want to live under the laws that they make?

Like what? Anti-abortion? Teaching creationism alongside science in schools?

I don't particularly have an issue with creationism being referred to when discussing "origins of the universe" type stuff. I think it's actually more beneficial to teach kids,"So..science says x,y,z and religious nutters say there's an imaginary friend in the sky who made us out of playdough". What better way to highlight the ridiculousness of it? :P

As for abortion, I think there are enough variations of opinion in parliament/congress to ensure a balanced approach to that one. There will always be scope/loopholes to get a foetus ripped out of your uterus if you really need to.

Besides that, some people can actually hold those opinions without forcing them on others. We just happen to hear about the feral ones.

Because they seem to be much more numerous and much more active.
