As we know, World Youth Day is quickly approaching and the Pope will be arriving in Sydney.
I heard on 702 radio and read in an article (which I'm currently searching for) that there was supposed to be a gay/lesbian conference of some description during the WYD celebrations, but they've been banned or stopped rather, from holding this conference because homosexuality goes against the Catholic faith.

I'm curious to know the general opinions of people on this issue.
Last time I checked, Jesus was supposed to have gone round and embraced all the people of his time that were considered "different" or ones that had mental/physical disorders etc etc, so if Jesus was so into helping and including all these "different" people, why are all the Catholics/Pope etc so against homosexuality today?

It's a free world, so I think it's sickening that these people who are open and proud of who they are, are basically forced to stop being themselves; just to please the Pope & Catholic population.

Well I took it to mean that it was going to be a part of the whole WYD thing (you know, the little gaybo subculture within the church can all get together and thank god for their love of sodomy/carpet munching etc) in which case they COULD ban it.

Well, if it's an in church thing...how does that work?  I mean, being Catholic and openly homosexual and all.

Lesbians kidnapping the Pope?  I'm sure I've seen that movie.

Now that I think of it though, there is historical precedents for people getting pissed off with Popes and kidnapping them, but they tend to be powerful leaders in their own right...and Popes can avoid this by clinging onto the altar and refusing to be dragged off, it seems.

The only people who think Catholics take the pope seriously are the Protestants.  There wouldn’t be a priest alive today who believes in this infallibility bit.  Even “His Holiness”, sic, Bishop Peal would just be towin the line so he can get promoted and probably thinks he’s a chance to get the gong when this Pope dies.  Call me a cynic, and you’d be right.

Well, the Pope isn't infallible except when he explicit states he is being infallible (which they almost never do), and it only applies to church matters.  He's allowed to not know if it will rain tomorrow.

It's very rare that the Pope will risk being wrong, so they never use their infallibility...they've only had it for a couple of hundred years anyway.

Oh yeah, I know that they've never been accepted by the church before, I just don't agree with them stopping something from going ahead that's is homosexual related, just because the Pope is in town. But as Yak said

- whereas I wasn't aware that it was a part of the whole WYD thing. I thought that it was a Gay/Lesbian conference that coincidentally was organised for same time as the WYD celebrations, which is why they banned it.
