The Examination Thread.
« on: June 07, 2008, 11:16:37 PM »

Well, I was going to make a new HSC thread because I know how much we all hate old threads being bumped, but in this day and age where you can't please anyone, I figured that Eru or Adi would just merge the threads together. So I created The Exams Thread because that way us HSC'ers and Uni students (uni exams are on currently..right?) can share our mental anguish with one another.

This isn't really an exam but it's an exam question I have to do for homework for English- studying Gwen Harwood poetry.

"Your class has been exploring the question, 'What will continue to make Harwood's poetry worthy of critical study?'

Your personal response has been challenged by another student. Defend your response through a critical evaluation of Harwood's poetry, analysing the construction, content and language of the text.

In your response, refer to THREE poems you have studied."

Fair enough, I understand that we're required to give a rebuttal response to the comments given by the other student, except.. We don't know what their comments are, so how on earth can we be expected to respond to them?!

You don't have to know what the other person said.

All you have to do is think of what your perspective is and argue it as if someone else was saying that everything you are saying is complete shit. Did that make any sense??

Pretty much, just argue convincingly what ever your position is.

Okay, so basically just say why we believe Harwood's poetry is worthy of critical study?

What subjects are you doing again? And what do you want to do next year?

It's just a way to get you to make your argument more forceful and less hypothetical. If someone's challenged your response, you're going to have to make a strong case to prove your point. Just argue your case as strongly as you can.

What subjects are you doing again? And what do you want to do next year?

Subjects are English HL, Spanish beginners, History HL, Chemistry SL, Maths SL and Music HL.

Next year...um...well...not really sure. I have an idea, but I will wait and see how well I do.

What do you want to do next year?

Haha, you really are a girl after my own heart... those subjects are the exact combination of my senior high school/uni subjects. :-)

well im sorry we're not all elite writers like yourself.
and considering everyone in advanced english (edit: and 2 others that do extension 1+2) that i've spoken to had the same issue, i think i have a right to question it.

What do you want to do next year?

Journalism or something Media related. If I completely screw up my HSC and don't get into the right courses, the only thing I've got going for me is the fact that i'll get my foot in the door as much as possible and suck up to a few people and make them help me

That sounds good. Too bad for me though. If I fuck up, it's off to the factory for me.

I'm only in Year 10, so I'm not a HSC/VCE/Whatever the other states call it student so I don't have exams.

We were supposed to, but the teachers admitted they couldn't be bothered running them.

Not that I'm complaining now, but come next year it's a slight disadvantage because I've never sat an exam before.

Yeah, I did chem in year 11 and it was a toss-up between chem & maths for year 12. In the end I chose maths, but we only do 5 subjects here in year 12. If I'd had to do 6, chemistry would have been the extra subject I'd have chosen. Chem's my favourite of the sciences.

Oh, and because we're in the exam thread, I should probably add that I have my Spanish conversation exam on Wednesday and my Spanish written exam on Thursday. All my other assessments are essays, thank gawd.

If I fuck up, all I have going for me is the hope that standing on corners at night will help.
Oh you should go to Melb with Bee & Vis. jk.

I'm lucky though, only because media is a field that is easy to break into as long as you're determined enough to hassle constantly and make yourself known. which i am constantly trying to do   and it may also help to be a half decent writer ahah.
