Yank For A Day!
« on: June 04, 2008, 11:32:43 AM »

Imagine if you were a US citizen on election day.  How would you vote?

It looks like the US presidential election candidates are going to be John "Ah" McCain and Barack Obama.  (It seems Hillary Rodham Clinton has all but conceeded the nomination, and has expressed interest the VP spot, even after having famously [and quite patronisingly] offerred it to Obama a few weeks ago despite his delegate lead).

So, forum - how do you all think that the battle of the Elephants and the Donkeys is going to go down?  I don't think that it would be hyperbole to say that the outcome of this election is going to change the political landscape of the entire world.  On one hand, you have a republican that, even though the democrats may be trying to tar him with the "George Bush the Third" brush, can prove that he has broken with his party on several key points, including torture and global warming.  On the other, you have an democrat who's charisma has been compared with the likes of JFK.  His party is preferred overall in the polls, and let's not forget that he's African American, which has a lot of symbolic power.

Personally, I'd vote for B to the A to the R-A-C-K O-B-A-M-A!

That's exactly what I thought, Bix.  Though if that were the case, it would surely be "Wank for a day" - wouldn't it?

I'm an Obama girl myself.  I think he's marvellous.

Obama. I took a dodgy web poll once and it told me who I thought was best.

And somehow that's still a more informed choice than the general voting public.

Well the fast thinking that I am, I thought it was some new hybrid concept that nym had come up with.

Is odd...both seem to have reasons to vote for them, as opposed to voting for the other person out of spite, which is what would usually happen.

Obama.

But what's the bet McCain gets it and everyone regrets it later.

Picked Obama to lead the Democrats from the outset. However, one-on-one, McCain easily accounts for Obama in pretty much every way - except youth.

The only thing that might stop McCain is GWB, and GWBs/Republicans record.

A poll was done in the US that showed that voters were less likely to support policies if they were told that the policies were endorsed by the GOP.  Basically, if the republicans supported sunrise, the voters would prefer gloom.  I think that the Republican party is unelectable, but they do have the best leader they've had for a long time.

Much as I love The Amazing Mr Adams, and agree wholeheartedly with those sentiments, surely you should still vote for about a million different reasons...

I say Obama, it's time for change. Although it would be kinda funny if McCain won after all the Obama v Hilary hoo-ha of the last year and half   :-P

obama wont win because there are so many dumbfuck americans who won't be able to get past the "obama" and "hussein" thing.

the thing i find kind of amusing is that he's riding this "black american" bandwagon, and all the old timers are going "ahh this is a great day for black america"...but his mum was white and his dad was a kenyan academic and grew up in bloody indonesia and hawaii. it's not like he's from a long line of oppressed black people who were kicked off buses and out of bars.

it's amazing how the african-american group are willing to latch onto him as a role model purely because of his skin colour, rather than any real shared history. isn't that generalisation, and when white people do it to them about negative things, they're labelled racist?

Yes, that has been pointed out before.

Personally, though, I like the people voting for him, not so much because he is black, but because he'd be the first black president.

If he gets in because of this, then next time they might run a transgender lesbian midget.
