It was Shakespeare apparently...

Hmmmm, even that acknowledges that he didn't exactly introduce it into the language.

I'm still refusing to use it, even if Papa Will did "invent" it.

I much prefer my verb "to twinkletoe", or the very apt verb "violate", meaning "to play the viola" :-)

As an aside, since when has 'bad' been a concrete noun? It's been bugging me... :|

YES!

This shits me to tears.

I always reply with,"Your bad what?". Then sound like a ranting old nana when I dribble on about it being an adjective yada yada.

That Shakespeare is entirely different to how it's used today.

"My bad, my good"....there's an "invisible noun" that those are describing (e.g. traits/deeds whatever).

You could argue that "my bad" as is used today also has an invisible noun, but i would argue it's still bullshit because you don't have the contextual framework to gauge that, as you do with Shakespeare's version.

Oh yes, 'bad' can function as a noun, but it is still an adjective. That's why I used the phrase 'concrete noun' - it isn't necessarily the linguistically correct term, but I was trying to show that it wasn't functioning as a "naming word", describing a thing. It's really clear when you learn another language (as usual) - in the Romance languages, there's a special way in which you can use an adjective as a noun - but this use isn't one of them!

Is it really that hard to use the word 'mistake'? 'Mistake' is a noun AND a verb! Use it as much as you want!

What is this forum coming to!? I noticed that this had gotten to 4 pages and I was thinking "Holy Crap, alot of people are flaming me!" So I skipped straight page 4 and you guys are going on about Shakespeare! May I ask what the hell is going on? Maybe this thread should be closed if it's turning into a Spam fest, because if it is we should get Tim Howard in here.

 If only you knew...

Welcome to the forum The Marauder, you'll find out every thread on this forum turns into a 'spam fest' usually by Marquis De Sade
