Yeah, sucks.

I did say I was aware that there are severe cases. The 'counellors' aren't bold enough to try and convince everyone their kids have severe aspergers. It's the fact that it is mild (and consists of traits which normal annoying children possess) that gives them the persuasive technique. You read through a 'home medicine' book and you'll find you're suffering from 417 different rare diseases.

Send a kid to a councellor for misbehaving in class... suddenly they've got a mental disorder!

Yeah, I know what you mean...it takes an expert to determine if someone has "a syndrome" or if the are "meant to be like that".

I have a nephew with Asperger's - quite severe, but it's amazing how all the early intervention that my sister arranged has paid off.

I used to get the horrors thinking about him as an adult, huge male with no social responsibility - but I don't worry about it any more because the improvement has been so great.  He's 19 now and doing really well - as well as one could hope anyway.  He'll never be able to drive or live alone or fill out forms, or any of the other adult stuff most people deal with, but I'm pretty sure he's not a danger to anyone.

The government's just announced $190mill funding for Autism early intervention. I have a sneaking suspicion that high functioning kids will once again slip through the cracks, but at least it's a first step. Gawd, I wish my brother had had early intervention, but it didn't really exist back then :|

It didn't exist when my nephew was born, either.  He was initially diagnosed as having PDAS (pathological demand-avoidance syndrome), a label that helped nobody and cleared nothing up.  :x

Now it's so freaking common there's one on every corner.

Ah...but thats the other problem...you go from not diagnosing anyone with it, to diagnosing everyone with it.

A mild case of any syndrome is a good excuse for things...also, it's almost become trendy to have the "genius disease".

t'is true...
shoving the topic slightly back to schooling, but i am curently completing my hsc, and notice that mild cases of anything are used by students now to apply for "special provisions"...this can be anything from stress to anxiety and beyond, however more often than not it's simply a case of your gp giving you a note. doesnt matter how well or worse off you are.

one person in my year received special provisions for "writing slowly", which was bunched under the title "exam anxiety"...

I can't wait until I'm older and tell my kids how "hard" life was as a teen :-P
