Mum indicted in MySpace teen suicide case


All my condolences go out to the poor kid (13)... But really, would you kill yourself over what someone (you've never met) said to you after only 3 weeks of talking via MySpace?


"Josh broke off the virtual relationship and sent the girl a message saying the world would be better off without her, according to prosecutors. Within an hour of receiving the message the girl hanged herself in the closet of her bedroom."

It would appear that the girl had serious self-image problems before Josh ever "met" her.

When people gibe the argument "it's just the internet" that annoys me, I don't think people should tell people the world would be better without them at all.
And the whole pretending to be people to make them upset and cause harm is really disgusting.

I don't agree with this at all.

She should not be held accountable for this. While her actions were cruel (also an incredibly strange thing for a fourty year old grown woman to do,) I'm sure she could never see or intended what resulted. The girl obviously had severe self worth issues to begin with.

Kids who stole a stop sign, which resulted in a crash that killed 3 people got jailed in the US. Same thing.

If you cause someone to fall over, and they die from the fall, you still get a manslaughter charge.

It's illegal to verbally abuse someone. Same thing.

I think the law has understood that assault is not necessarily physical for quite a long time now. They also recognise that being stupid does not absolve you of guilt.

Well, it depends how well she knew the chick.

Some neighbours know each other quite well... So if she knew the kid was a little on the precious side, she might have been able to foresee the consequences.
