The War on Spam.
« on: May 13, 2008, 12:19:44 AM »

As you have no doubt noticed, there has been much discussion lately about spamming, especially of pictures. Up until now, we've been pretty tolerant, hence the proliferation of threads in Miscellaneous Timewasting and similar ones in other places. However, the spamming seems to have reached new levels lately, and the time has come to lay down the law just a bit.

Please keep all spamming to an absolute minimum. We're not going to go on a long, tedious rant about what defines spamming, we know that you all have a brain and can make judgements for yourself. Pages and pages of conversations with yourself is spamming. Post after post after post of pictures of celebrities or other personal whims and fancies is spamming. Posts that follow a stream-of –consciousness-type progression without contributing in any way to any conversation are spamming. We could go on in a similar vein, but we know you have the nous to work it out for yourselves.

Pretty much all of us have indulged in spamming on here at one time or another. Blame isn’t going to be levelled at people who might have gone wild in the past, we just ask that you rethink your approach to posting, especially if you are someone whose majority of posts are along the spam lines.

Long streams of spam will be deleted. 99% of people don’t want to read it, and it makes the interesting conversations hard to find in amongst it all. Any more than several pictures in close proximity will be converted to links – among other issues, it uses up bandwidth for all of us who don’t have unlimited broadband plans.

We’re not going to delete SUOPC or similar threads, but please carefully consider creating new threads that are of a solely spammable nature.

We're not deliberately picking on people, but the reality is that some people's persistent hijacking of threads is not only annoying for everyone else, but also completely outside the point of the forum. Take it elsewhere - PM, chat, MSN, blogs, myspace, Facebook, email, telephone, even real life! Not here.

By order of the powers that be.

Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.
