Should we abolish post counts?
« on: May 04, 2008, 04:24:22 PM »

Okay.  It has come to light that some of us are getting pretty pissed off with the amount of spam drivel floating around, as some people care more about how high their post count is than the quality of their posts.

My proposal is that we abolish post counts either altogether, or just have them on the stats page.  Instead of the post count, we could have date joined, or posts per day, or something I haven't thought of yet.

How about average daily post counts in the stats?

I want to know why me being abusive scores me a ban, but there's no rule to deter people from being painfully annoying by posting post after post of inane crap like *scratches head*.

Personally, I'm less irritated by SG calling me all the names under the sun than I am by the fairy floss brigade.

I don't care - post count or no post count, I'm still likely to most inane dribble in large quantities. Now it's habit.

Maybe it's because there's a difference from being offended by abuse to being annoyed at lame comments. Maybe. It's according to the rules.

"News: DO NOT ABUSE NEW MEMBERS. Or in fact anyone. Offenders will be banned. As per these rules, which you should all read."

beefy, I think Yaks mind will be at ease now that she has the answer.

But maybe to stop others forming habit, take away post counts. Maybe trial it for a month see if there's less dribbling pigeons.

Hey, how about: Let the system stay like it is. No adding of 10,000 post level status because people will obviously try and get to it. Of course feel free to disagree. Just an idea.

That's a good idea, but are you sure it would work in the long term? This is like a Procrastinating Central. People obviously come here to procrastinate no matter what. It's a distraction unless the whole forum gets removed. That's what I think anyways.

If we're going to work by those rules, then there should be no more levels after about 2,000. That's more than enough. But even if there wasn't a new level, Visi et al would still want to reach the magic number.

Hows about no post count and have levels according to amount of time joined?

Sounds sensible enough, providing we can actually do that.

You mean, the amount of time spent on the forum? Hmm.  :|

No, not the time online, the length of time since you joined. 5th April 1954, 7th December 2023, that sort of thing. That will give a very different view of long-term loiterers!

Yes, that way, those "I'm better than you because I've been here for x number of years" people will stop complaining and you can't exactly "up" your date joined.

I don't mind total posts being there. In fact, I'm quite happy that mine is so low for the time I have spent here. Then again, I totally don't get the concept of SUOPC (though that's ok, I just ignore it) and I pay no attention to post count when deciding whose comments to read or how to interpret them. But while displaying post count doesn't bother me, I think that info such as member since whatever date or member for however long is more useful information. Posts per day doesn't say a lot without being accompanied by either time or post count.
