That they weren't convicted?
Not really. It would have been stupid if they were.

I would have loved to see them in jail

Yeah, it would have been funny for about a week and for everyone but them and their families.
Plus, depending on how long they were sentenced for, it would have prevented further Chaser work, therefore diminishing a majority of work opportunities for the remaining team members.

ewwwwwwwwww  I reckon it would have created more opps in ABC Factual Programming, that is.

If convicted, Chas and Julian would have negotiated they can take in mini-DV cameras to shoot their ordeal. They would start a satirical prison paper lampooning the guards, the system etc.  There's a feature documentary right there.

The remainder would have taken the Variety Hour into prisons in solidarity for their friends and hapless former employees: another feature documentary and/or uplifting Compass piece.

An Australian Story afterwards *sob* to mop up.

 That'd be interesting, pretty good idea.
But if they were convicted for say, two years; how would the fangirls survive with no dvd?!?  :-o

NSW Director of Public Prosecutions Nicholas Cowdery said in a statement that the Chaser team had carried out an examination of the area on September 5, when police procedures had differed from September 6, when the stunt occurred.

"The offence is one of strict liability. Consequently, the defence of honest and reasonable mistake of fact is available to the accused,'' Mr Cowdery said.

"Put another way, it is a defence to establish, or to raise a reasonable doubt that there existed, an honest and reasonable but mistaken belief in a set of facts which, if they had existed, would have rendered the conduct innocent.

If this is the case then the Team have dropped the ball by effectively claiming "Sir, we really really thought it was legit to do what we did, honest".

Which kind of removes the whole cutting edge/rebellious theme they thrive on.

So ultimately the pwers that be win, the Chasers make feeble excuses about their behaviour being "innocent" conduct and it all gets washed under the carpet....

Pathetic.

Demand your day in court and fight for the freedoms the unknowns cannot, use your fame/infamy to point out how retarded shutting large sections of Sydney down actually is rather than just using it for a ratings ploy and then folding with pathetic excuses prior to the court date.  That is what I would expect of TT or ACA.

Still, they saved some money on the wigs.  I was working at the ABC recently and saw a very confident young man, probably a junior barrister, striding purposefully across the foyer with a Chaser APEC folder thrust under his arm... He looked bemused  :-)

I concur. Hard time is the only way they could have regained their lost cred.

Kim Dalton:
"What was undeniably the greatest moment in political satire last year, which the ABC has always been very proud of, has been found to be just that - great political satire."

Heh, I just listened to the interview, where Chas said that they were simply doing it to get cheap laughs, and that it amazes him that people think they were doing it to make a deep satirical point. I love how they're all still so consistently self-deprecating after all this time.
