Catwalk Children.
« on: April 11, 2008, 04:55:24 PM »

Linky.

Wasn't sure where to put this.

So Vogue has decided that they will not feature a 14 year old polish model as a model for fashion week.
They want the minimum age to be 16.
I think this is fair enough I guess, but at the same time I think it's not.
I mean I guess it is because models are used for there bodies, but really so are actors, and look at all the 14 year old - and even younger - actors there are out there.
I would say that they would be exposed to as much as models do, even more.
And they are also seen for their bodies as well.
I mean where do you stop it I guess?

Hi,

my name is Svetlana and I am a 14 year old Polish girl.

My future is undecided.  I currently have the potential to earn about a million bucks a year asa model but some feminist types want me to finish school first and then get a real job.

Which in Poland equates to earnin $4.63 per month.

Help me please loyal readers, I know thatschool is the better option but I just can't see why...

Fucking idiots.  If some retards want to pay this girl a shedload of cash to sashay up and down a runway then so be it, good for her.

The thing with actors, is that they're apparently recognised for their talent, whereas models is more personal appearance.

Remember that media beatup where a young Queensland girl was chosen to be the face of some fashion week, everyone thought she was too young and made a big fuss, eventually I think she withdrew from being the face, just participated in the show.

I read somewhere else though that it was the whole scene.
And even though she will have an escort the behind the scenes bits they were thinking wasn't good for a 14 year old with all the partying and everything.

Surely actors are the same in that.

I find the fact that people that age (about my age) doing that kind of stuff weird. The polish girl is probably younger than me  :|

Wasn't the objection not that she was 14 years old, but that was 14 years old and made up to look like a sexy 18 year old (in theory)?  That what she was modelling was inappropriate for 14 year olds?

Naturally, it's our own resident 14 year old pretending to be 18 that brings this up.

Grrr, Thal, I am 18! :(
I even posted my license in some other thread and it has my birthday!

And yes well that has always been a problem that the clothes are too grown up for a 14 year old.
But look at what 14 year old are wearing these days anyway.
It is more that she is being pushed into an adult world or whatever.
And body image and all that.

"A" licence, which you blacked out msot of.

And you don't think having role models like her has anything to do with it?

Though yes, if the parents were paying attention, it wouldn't be an issue.

Well I'm not going to leave my address, photos and license number for everyone to see now am I.

Well true.
That probably does play a big part.
But when looking at kids role models they are not always their age.
Like most 14 year olds naturally look up to people that are older then them, like Hilary Duff, and Jesse McCartney and Ashley Tisdale who just appeal to that audience and are not that age.
Where as a 14 year old model is thrown into a world of adults, and designers and not as many young 10 - 14 year olds are into high fashion.
And that is a little creepy really her being made to look sexual and everything by people who are so much older then her while she is still so young.

So?  It's impossible for older role models to behave in a respectable manner?

No, just saying that a 14 year old model that wears very 'adult' clothes is not necessarily the reason why 14 year old these days dress like that too.
They dress like that because a lot of celebrities do regardless of their age.

Has nothing to do with that celebrities should be respectable, I'm talking about ones that are not.

Though Ashley Tisdale is actually quite a good role model for young girls so far I think.
Let's just hope she doesn't go off the rails.

So?  Then they shouldn't be encouraged to view those people as role models.

But they are.
It doesn't matter if they should or shouldn't it's the fact that they are that is what I'm talking about.
I agreed Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton type girls are hardly what I would like young girls to grow up into, but there are still many who do look up to them.
They are rich and famous and beautiful.
Of course people want to be like them.

In which case, there's no point discussing whether or not we should have 14 year old models, because there are.

In any case, they are only taken as role models by the children of parents who don't encourage them to have better ones.
