OK. So the Irwin juggernaut has really taken off into the world of the completely absurd, with the  release of the new "Bindi doll".

The bit I love most in that article is this:

The nine-year-old daughter of the late Steve Irwin, had hoped to unveil her Bindi doll at the fair on the weekend.

But according to the New York Post, she turned down the offer - because she would have been the only child allowed in the Javits Center.

"They said they would make an exception for Bindi," Terri told the Post. "I said, 'No, thank you. I don't want Bindi to grow up being the exception.' "

Yeah. Right.

So I went on a bit of a hunt for all things Bindi. Of course, I'd heard her before prattling on like a fucking twat on Letterman and Ellen and Larry Kingbut had never come across Bindi's music career:

My Daddy the Crocodile Hunter and Bindi's  rap career.

..and her TV career, "Bindi the Jungle Girl"...

I know she's a kid. I know she doesn't have control over how she's being exploited. But this shit is getting ridiculous now. I'd go so far as to say it's child abuse.

So the point is, they're going to market a doll to kids about Bindi's age and make them idolise someone their own age? What has Bindi done? Except being exploited in the worst way without her knowing about it.

What's wrong with idolising someone their own age? Bindi lives in the shadow of her father and has claimed she wants to go on with all his croc hunting wild life conserving sort of stuff - I would prefer kids to have this as an idol than certain pop stars. And of course she's being exploited, she's a cute child who had a famous father.

Thats true Kelch, but...What's her future going to be like? Is she going to actually be a conservationist or whatever.. Or is she just going to market towards funding the environment and conservation?

Well aren't both still positive things? And as I thought the Irwin family (not just Steve) were into being conservationists. I think all of this marketing is stupid and too a certain extent abusive of Steve's death, but really, isn't it better that someone like her has an opportunity to become a role model?

Well, you never know. Kids perceptions about jobs and stuff these days are changing. I'm 15.. Ask me 2 years ago what I wanted to be and it'll be a way off answer to what i'd say now.

i reckon there's a DIY story in that...

something about a resurge in the popularity of troll dolls as consumers are confused about the release of the bindi doll.
