"Satire shelters the Left"
« on: January 08, 2008, 10:12:53 PM »

So I came across this when I was surfing the net and thought it could make for good conversation.

Here's the article:

Quote
I HOPE that the Manic Times, recently launched by former Chaser Charles Firth ("Gonzos keen to share repulsion with Rudd”, Media, 27/9), takes Australian satire out of the rut it’s in.

Satire in the UK and the US attacks folly and vice wherever they exist, but Australian satire rarely attacks the Left. If you see any satirisation of someone from the Left, it’s usually criticism that they are not far enough Left.
When you read or listen to this so-called satire, you feel like you’re being taken for granted because the satire is based on the premise that you share the satirist’s ideology. And then when you don’t laugh, it’s not the satirist’s fault for being mundane and boring, it’s your fault for having an incorrect world view. If a society is truly healthy, it will satirise all its follies and vices. For the true satirist, there is material everywhere.

So, why do you think there are no right-wing satirists? There was no need under the old gov? Right-wingers are not as funny? What's your thoughts on this one guys.

Hmm.....
Maybe it's got something to do with the fact that we've had a right-wing government for so long here, and it's often the government that gets satirised, regardless of their political leanings. I'm sure if the WoE was continuing this year KRudd would be copping just as much on the satire front.

Well, it is usually easier to make fun of those in power.

But everyone made fun of Rudd and Gillard before they got in, nobody really takes Al Gore seriously.

EDIT:  They aren't really left wing, though...we don't really see many actual left wingers around.

You could say Bob Brown, in that he's sort of a hippy which in the minds of many is close enough...but how do you make him look funny?  It's almost as bad as attacking Bush...though, the Greens are one of the few parties to really speak out against him, which is embarassing.

Exactly.

Plus, our "left" is becoming increasingly "right" anyway, so there isn't really a "right" or "left" anymore. Labor is no longer full of ex-unionists or construction workers wearing proverbial blue wife beaters and pluggers to parliament - nope, now they're degree-toting, language-speaking guys in shiny suits, just like the Libs.

I think the Chaser for example did a good job at taking everyone on. Think of all the crap about KRudd near the end! There was just as much about Labor as there was Liberal. And if it seemed like they were on Labor's "side" - well, perhaps it's not so much sides with the last election as a pretty sure-fire bet that Labor was going to win.

Another thing, "folly" from the Opposition usually doesn't have far-reaching effects, whereas folly from the Government in power does, thus fitting in with Mushroom's hypothesis about Australia having been under a Liberal government for 11 years.

Yeah, You guys have very good points.

I think they are still left, I do agree that they have made fun of people on the left too, but they are left themselves.

They admit to listening to those godhatesfags.com tapes late at night in their office for a laugh. A right-winger wouldn't do that.

Hm.

They admit to listening to those godhatescrude, homophobic term that reveals my ignorances.com tapes late at night in their office for a laugh. A right-winger wouldn't do that.

Why not?

You get right wingers who don't favour the extermination of homosexuals, you know.
