What's the difference between an obsessive fan and a fangirl?
« on: December 21, 2007, 02:47:01 PM »

(Before anyone comments, yes, I'm back, and yes, I was away for a while, and yes, I know none of you really care either way.)

Okay.  There seems to be a lot of anti-fangirl sentiment around here </statement of obvious>, which made me wonder:  where does a really obsessive fan become a fangirl?  And is one of those two more acceptable (in the forums, at least), than the other?

In my opinion (for what it's worth), "fangirls" are the ones who love the Chaser because everyone else does and because they think it's cool/socially desirable to do so; they're the ones who talk endlessly about how hot [insert Chaser boy here] is, but don't particularly care too much about the show's actual content.  An obsessive fan, on the other hand, tracks down every piece of Chaser-related AV they can find because they find the guys generally funny/clever/interesting.  Their fannishness is related more to content than aesthetics; they're the people you talk to if you want to learn random trivia about the show.

Is my definition anywhere near correct?

I'd say it might be a useful definition, yes.

It seems any teenage female who takes an interest in The Chaser is automatically a fangirl.

i think that just about nails it down. like the ppl who dnt actually kno the difference between Peter Costello and Kevin Andrews. the girls who just started watching it coz they became popular and dnt really care to watch CNNNN coz its not as "cool" as the war, a good example of a fangirl is the "The Chaser's War on Three Teenagers' Hearts" story, lmao

Please learn to spell correctly. And use correct punctuation.

So...where did you come up with a name like that? It's interesting. Really. I was sad to see that your first couple of posts are in the FFFP section. You will have fun in this area. Why don't you make an introduction thread?

Oh, in case anyone can't tell, I'm really bored at the moment.

My name is Belinda and since I was 8 or 9 everyone has called me Belz. I'm often described as evil so Hells Belz seemed fitting.
And sorry about the whole punctuation thing, I get kind of lazy in the holidays

I wasn't talking about that name. It was about the first one you had. And there is a place for intros. Put it there. I'm off.

*Nods at JTNK*  :-) Couldn't agree more (well I could, but I'm not going to).

Okay, okay ....

In my view fangirls/fanboys are the one's who are fans of the people/people's looks before the people's talent and are more likely to come out with a comment about the peoples looks rather than performance/talent (and this goes for most things-sport is another good example). Many of my friends sit in this category

Fans differ because they go for the content before the people. eg. "I watch The Chaser because it makes me laugh" as opposed to "I watch The Chaser because I think [Chaser person's name] is cute/whatever."

Then you've got your other group who are purely content-based watchers (eg. hardcore nerds who want to be in on what everyone else is talking about, people who want to "borrow" or plagiarize ideas and lawyers of the companies/people who are looking to make a dollar or two .)

And then you've got your happy compromisers. Who go- "Hell yeah, the show is funny and by the way that [Chaser person] is not too bad on the eye.

I am a fan and I am a female...but- I have always liked satirical comedies be they Chaser-type or otherwise. I've watched since CNNNN which a lot of people haven't. I also read things like "The Bladder" and listen to/watch other comedy which isn't hosted by attractive peoples....my desire to watch is for the comedy factor. I write songs with satirical lyrics and so I can appreciate the work/sheer flukishness of what goes into the sketches on a different level to people who are watching just for laughs or to see what ridiculous (and hilarious) stunt is going to be pulled.

All I will say is everyone understands humour/most things on different levels, doesn't make them any better or worse than anyone else.

God only knows what the "fangirls"  make of Chris' obscure sketches, eg. Leni Riefenstein- Hausfrau Hitler  :?

Actually to be honest I'm not sure too many people actually DID get the full point there...

I'm annoyed that everyone calls me a Fangirl. Just because I'm 14 and Andrew is my avatar shouldn't instantly make me one, I was watching CNNNN when I was 9/10 years old, understood the jokes and everything. Back then I liked Andrew and Chris equally and it wasn't for looks, I thought they were the funniest. I am a huge comedy fan (step into my room, my walls are covered with Monty Python and Goodies posters... and my 3 roof-high DVD cases are crammed with nothing but comedy tv shows and movies on DVD). I do think that Andrew is very sweet and caring and yes I do think he's good looking, doesn't mean I just watch the show for his looks.

Sorry for going on and on...

I think my definition is a pretty valid and widely applicable one.
