The Diggers' Christmas Countdown.
« on: December 18, 2007, 12:26:26 AM »

Will Kevin Rudd honour his commitment to bring the troops home from Iraq in time for Christmas... 2004?

Given that he finally has his hand on the nation's lever, and not just his own, will he announce the withdrawal of Australian troops from Iraq in time for Christmas?

Of course he will.

Just remember that the process is subject to a study by various academics, will be reviewed by several boards and committees and is, of course, not about binding targets but is all about "the vibe".

KRudd only has a week to go to make the announcement.  The clock is ticking.

Does anyone other than me think he won't have our troops out of Iraq before Christmas 2008? Could he have been making cynical use of a populist issue simply to get re-elected?

Shall we run a book on dates?

I'll put my hand up for 14th of February, 2009.

Surely his ability to bring the troops home by any given date is dependent on when he got into power.

As opposed to yours who was all about the money.

And that's not a "nose so bright" that's just a fucking zit.

Though, KRudd never actaully promised to pull the troops out, did he...jsut some bullshit about a phased withdrawal once their job was done or something.

Didn't some minister or other say that they weren't going to increase troops (unless the EU does) but they weren't going to withdraw troops until 2010?

I think we're going for the 'phased withdrawal'. Two have already come back recently  :-P

"On 30 November 2007, the newly-elected government of Australia announced the pullout of the country's 550 combat soldiers by early 2008" (out of 1000 troops)

Of course, I'm sure Julia Gillard will preside over this bit given that to a woman "early 30's" goes up to about 39yrs 11 months, and therefore "early 2008" could stretch a little further with a few layers of blusher.

You're sort of obliged to stop making fun of her appearance if you go down that route, you know.

Bringing the troops home in time for Valentine's Day 2009 doesn't seem to have the same ring to it.
