Christmas lights: pretty but not green
« on: December 05, 2007, 01:05:30 PM »

As the skies at night brighten up with twinkling Christmas lights from hundreds of festive homes, I wonder just how many tonnes of energy are being frittered away.

What do you think?  Is the spirit of Christmas so strong in you that you think the uselessly blazing lights are justified?  Or are you appalled and saddened by the waste and CO2 emissions?

What, you'd prefer everyone to sit around feeling miserable, eating chocolate & fruit mince pies, increasing demand at Nestle & Cadburys, who have to increase production, pumping more CO2 into the atmosphere, not to mention the increased strain on our health system from ever more depressed, overweight & diabetic people who have eaten too much chocolate and become reclusive to the point where they can't work and have to resort to breaking & entering and stealing from the happy homes of people who have christmas lights to support their chocolate & newly acquired cocaine addictions, creating stress on the law enforcement departments, who lose their christmas holiday leave to control the surge in criminal activity - sagging police moral and causing cops to quit & commit suicide, leading to the break down in the moral fabric of society itself. All before the oceans even rise by 1cm.

What kind of sadistic fascist are you?  :x

Are you as frugal as you could possibly be in you energy consumption?

Well, of course you're not...and there's no good reason for you to be here, wasting power logging into the chaser forum.

I don't think they're that bad - especially the newer LED variety.  I just think they're tacky.

I agree!

And they are a damn good indicator of who deserves to be burgled next, as they are a waste of space, and have too much money!

Of course, LEDs do use 5 to 6 times less power than conventional bulbs, so you can be assured that by abusing their owners, you are certainly abusing a greenie! W00t!

I'll add another vote against tackiness. I don't care if your christmas lights are energy efficient led's run off solar power and you are taking donations to save gay whales in the rainforest... if your christmas display features any form of red-nosed reindeer, fake snow or fat red-coated men with ridiculous beards it should be eradicated with extreme force...

And no, I don't mean that a nativity scene is ok either... we all know the *true* meaning of Christmas is to eat way too much and drink even way too mucher...

Take a trip out to Lobethal in the Adelaide Hills sometime. The whole town is lit up and they run bus tours up there especially to see the lights. The locals get some kind of power subsidy.

I went up there a few years ago: tacky doesn't cover it.

Yeah... I kinda figured there's a reason I was avoiding it... Although... power subsidy, eh? So they might want some extra power maybe? Not opposed to nuclear are they? In the form of warheads?

It was just a thought I threw out there.  You are quite right to point out my hypocrisy Thalu.

Here in Bendigo there are whole neighbourhoods where every house is lit up like - well, like a Christmas tree!  We go walking around there.  All the neighbours are out on the street chatting and it's very pleasant.

Been to Lobethal a couple of times...*yawn*.

Some Sydney suburbs are way more over-the-top in the Christmas light thingy.

A place in Ashbury (the entire street is like this):

Hustville:

..then there is somewhere near Cromer that is, well, ridiculous.

I was seriously underwhelmed. What there was was just tacky.

There are a few houses around the city that look like those too. It's the neighbours I feel sorry for.
