Election debate
« on: October 21, 2007, 08:48:20 PM »

How do people think Howard and Rudd did in the debate tonight? How much impact do you think it will have on the campaign - i.e. will a bad debate lose it for one side?

Channel 9 is using the worm and it's decidedly pro-Rudd at the moment.

The worm certainly isn't doing Howard any favours. Rudd only has to open his mouth and it shoots up! Looks like Johnny should have befriended the Chaser's worm after all.

The best bit so far was when they had the argument. Howard doesn't do himself any favours by getting angry.

(Ooh, he just threw in a cricket analogy!)

I actually have never listened to Rudd long enough to really care one way or the other, but I think it was an interesting debate. He came across as much more intelligent than Howard.

Sure, Rudd kept on about his key points, but Howard just seemed to be on the back foot the whole time, playing catch-up. I abhorred the way he didn't answer the question put to him THREE TIMES ffs on whether Iraq reduced or increased our risk of terrorist attack. Fuckwit.

The other interesting thing was this whole climate change issue. Rudd got a bit flustered with that line of questioning when that guy repeated the question. I think he thought he'd answered it... he did, but it wasn't as clear as his second (and quite grumpy) attempt.

Do you know that I can pinpoint the first time that Howard actually started taking climate change seriously? It coincided with one of my TAFE subjects last year - Sustainable Development - so it has made the month of September, 2006 stand out. This is because it's the first time JHo admitted there was a problem.

SEPTEMBER 2006, PEOPLE!!!

Wow, three posts for one topic. I'm doing well. I must have a bit to say on the subject.

I was watching the ABC and it said afterwards that Howard had specifically said No Worm, and that Channel 9 got in shit for using it.

So... Costello's going to be PM if JHo wins the next election, hey? Not many people like that idea...  :-o

Yep, Howard had explicitly said he didn't want it, and Ray Martin said at the end of the Channel 9 coverage that they lost their feed twice and ended up using Sky TV's vision. He made it quite clear that some power-that-be pulled it because of the worm (which, incidentally, made Rudd the clear winner).

Do you think it will affect many people's vote, or is it more about the policy announcements/stunts? I don't know how many people would sit through the whole 90 minutes, especially if they're not up with all the intricacies of the issues.

yehh everytime howard opened his mouth the worm went down in the first half.. but it got better in the second.. also did you notice how howard dodged a lot of the questions such as the one on IR laws... while the worm went up whenever rudd talked.. rudd did end up dodging a few questions but the only one i recall was the one about the carbon emissions target..

i think rudd will win the debate

and i think it will affect the election

Was it just me or did JHo look a little sick at certain points? I was actually wondering if he had suffered a minor stroke or was about to have a heart attack or something. He definitely didn't look right.

The thing is, Adi, alot of people will change their minds over the next few weeks. The carrot dangled in the remaining few hours will more than likely be the most influential to alot of Australians, simply because they are stupid.  :|

Mmm, best to be cautious. Labor has trounced Howard in both the last two debates, and yet lost the elections. Although, Rudd certainly comes across as confident and capable but without the unpleasant agressiveness that was always Latham's problem. Rudd has such an advantage by being so new on the scene - people aren't sick of him yet.

I put it down to Howard having his grumpy things-aren't-going-my-way-so-I'm-going-to sulk face on.

I know. That's the problem. Gullibility factors decide elections, I'm sure of it. That's partly why Rudd wanted 3 debates. One debate, one week in, is going to be forgotten after 6 weeks of one-upmanship.

Thats how I felt too, John Howard, in his arguments, always seemed to be catching up to Kevin Rudd. Kevin is clearly the better public speaker. Did anyone notice how John Howard kept hitting the mic's? He did it like 5 times!
