federal politicians already get too much power. imagine what sort of police state this country will turn into if john howard (or whoever the future little hitlers are going to be) manages to inject his pro-state propaganda in the schooling system, hospitals, law courts etc. it's bad enough that the media are his bitches, we don't need it to get any worse.

That's a good point.

However, I'm with bludger on this one - the education system needs to be centralised! NSW's is too "zomgzomgstreeeessssssssss" and WA's is too easy. I don't know about the others, input people?

It doesn't make sense that the kiddies of Australia have so many different standards to meet. For fucks sakes, when I moved back to NSW at the beginning of 2007, ready to start year 12, I would have had to repeat year 11 under the NSW schooling system just to get me up to standards - and I was getting good marks under the WAlien system!!

Crazy.

Crazy.

but the entrance to universities are more stringent, evening it out.

i went through the west australian school system, and i have a hell of a lot more general knowledge than alot of the forumsters that went through the east coast systems.

you'll get out of it what you will.

UWA has the harderst courses to get into in the country - ones under constant demand from students in other states.

Looks like my Chaser Referendum got knocked back.
As Ben Cousins' stomach says, "Such is life"

So has anybody got other ideas how to cut out the political bullshit of our 3 levels of government?

Do away with politicians altogether and employ trained camels to do the work?

Sorry, shouldn't be so flippant. But I guess we should be glad we've got three tiers of government. It might add to the bureaucracy, but it's got to be better than a dictatorship.

Name a dictator you'd be happy to have running the country.

You misunderstand. I don't mean I'd like someone who is currently a dictator in charge of this country, simply that, depending on who the person is and what they do, it could be more efficient and better than a fucked up, corrupt version of democracy. If you had a dictator in power who legitimately had the needs and interests of the people at heart, then it would cut through a lot of the red tape. But yeah, corruption of power, etc etc. I'm just saying.

I presumed that was what you meant, but that's the problem. People start out accepting a dictator because they really do seem the solution to all the country's problems. They do reduce bureaucracy. Things do happen; things do get fixed. Then it all starts to go downhill. It's always the same, whether they're fascist, communist or anywhere in between. Power corrupts, and no matter how good the intention things begin to get out of control.

I know what you mean, it's very tempting to think that one person could come along as a benevolent dictator and fix everything that's screwed about 'democracy'. But it hasn't yet happened, and I don't hold hopes for it happening any time soon. Human nature doesn't seem to work that way, much to the loss of all of us.

So we are protected from an oppressive dictator by layers and layers of bureaucratic ineptitude.
