But if you nuke Germany, it'll wipe out most of the other countries, too, like France.  Wait until after I've had my European holiday. 

I think it's probably a fair call that some of the ideas they had, such as fixing roads or hospitals or other community-based problems were probably okay. They may have wanted to build decent infrastructure. I don't know enough about their policies on those issues to give an informed opinion, though. Does anyone here know more about it?

Though, one wonders what the actual questions were.

Were they "Do you think the building of the autobahns under Nazi rule was good or bad?"  "Do you like the Olympic Torch Race which the Nazi's came up with?" sort of things?

So long as you weren't Jewish, a Slav, mentally or physicall disabled (pretty much only if you were a healthy Aryan) then Nazi German pre world war 2 wasn't actually that bad. They had many incentives for workers (paid holidays to places workers wouldn't usually be able to afford), many people felt that they belonged because of the different groups, there were many government loans that really helped people out (e.g. a young couple got a loan of 4000-6000 marks to start a family. If they had one child 25% of the loan didn't have to be repaid, 2 children 50% didn't have to be repaid, four children meant that the entire loan didn't have to be repaid)

There were a few good things for citizens under the Nazi government, although it was a terrible period in history.

I wonder how much of my viewpoint is tarnished by the fact that my husband lost most of his side of the family due to the Nazis, and with his grandparents surviving Auschwitz and Mauthausen?

Naziism unified a contry and drove a lot of achievement.  Shame that it had such evil contexts included within it that far outweighed the good it did.

For what it's worth I'm surprised MORE Germans don't think they were so bad.  When everyone keeps shouting at you how bad something you did was then the natural reaction is to defend yourself, regardless of right or wrong.

It's time the world moved on and allowed Germany to move on.  Not to say forget or deny, but to accept these were things from a different era.
