--- Quote from: Nate on October 10, 2007, 03:57:13 PM ---Oh wait, am I too late to do my little song and dance for why I'd make a great moderator for an internets site about satire which makes use of sarcasm and subtelty?
My bet is maybe DJ, but she's not been on here too long. This works both for and against her, although she's possibly a very likely candidate. However, she's also got a sharp tongue on her (or finger, as the case is). This means she isn't like five of the seven moderator types I can list off the top of my head. Not a good place to be if the only witty ones in places of power are the two admins; one of which find his own site taxing because of us fucking bastards ruining it all and the other feeling his consort's pain and thus unleashes the full extent of his dire power whenever the oppourtunity presents itself. Like an e-Thor.
DJ is a favourite poster on this site for me, so although she'd make a nice mod, I'm pretty sckeptical as to if she should get the modship because I'm dubious to if she'd change or not. Let's hope for the latter.
Keriwiden is a strong contender for modship. She just fits the bill for what they're looking for- frequently on the site, not having been reported, understanding what we're all supposed to be doing here.
Blue is probably on the pick-a-mod dartboard Dom and Richy are aiming at too. Much like Keriwiden, Blue's been here long enough to know what goes down. However, I think Blue will decline as she's just here for fun, as if she even knows what that means anymore. Fun. PFF! Who has that nowadays, especially on the internets?
Trucka. I had a convo with Yak about this in the things that are shit thread, and I still believe she's the best candidate this site has. Bring on the pictures, topics and general posts altered to accomodate all things about cats wearing clothing.
bollocks. Sad, but true. Another of the best candidates this site has. Her sniping isn't too vitriolic (unless you know her- I do and I can just hear her say some of the things she says on this damn site) and she's pretty fair. She constructs a well enough argument, even if it is flawed when it comes to sporting events, and is well-balanced overall which is more than what anybody else on here can say about themselves.
Nym has a fair chance at becoming a mod too, although since she likes open confrontation too much, she isn't likely to take it if presented.
Black Horse: Not too sure about these bets. I don't think any of us saw Eru comin out, but that's the idea of the black horse vote.

OK, I haven't made this a poll since I'm not sure any (let alone all) of the candidates want to stand for the position(s)...
I can also say I'm not sure who I would want as a mod, however, I will say that it seems to me as though the forum is in a bit of a bind over this matter.
First of all, I can't stand when people draw comparisons to other forums, but, on another forum I participate in, all the mods are regular contributors. All are quite well respected and it all runs smoothly. There are some fairly strict rules and they are enforced - not entirely a bad thing. Everyone knows what the rules are, what is acceptable and what isn't. Not to say no-one ever breaks the rules, but the reaction to that occurrence is fair and consistent. Which is easy when the rules are clear cut like that. Having said that, it's a place I go to for advice on the topic and not usually for fun and banter. I have less than 200 posts there and have been a member for three and a half years. Hardly prolific. (Then again, I'm not exactly prolific by the standards of this place, but I like to think of myself as quality not quantity orientated).
Anyway, it seems to me that the problem with this place is that it (at least previously) attracted individuals with a somewhat cutting sense of humour and a low tolerance for stupidity and bullshit. This made for some interesting banter which sometimes overstepped the mark but was tolerated by most of the regulars (I say most because obvioulsy there were a few incidents!) and there was a pretty relaxed moderation which encouraged that kind of culture. Unfortunately, I don't think you can have your cake and eat it too. Trying to draw the line of what it acceptable behaviour and what isn't when it depends who is on the receiving end is impossible. You either need to have stricter rules and enforce them consistently, or more relaxed rules and too bad for those who don't like it. If you go with option a you will have a great chaser fan site I'm sure, but lose a lot of the regulars, political discussion etc. The other way, you'll continue to lose a lot of the newbies. I'm not arguing particularly for one or the other, but I do think you can't have it both ways. Well, not if you expect anyone to be a mod *and* respected by everyone when their position is largely untenable...

i think the 'regular contributor' thing is good. there's nothing worse than a moderator who's rarely around and only pokes their head in when there's a stoush and siding with the person who cries the loudest without having a full idea of the dynamic of the situation.
i know i said in the other thread that it'd be good if the person had 'connections' with a wide variety of people in the forum so as to 'moderate by stealth' rather than acting like some kind of evil overlord. while that has its merits, i think it's better that it's someone who has remained 'distant' from other forumsters...someone like fritz maybe...who doesn't have personal allegiances and won't be swayed because they're friends with a particular group of people (god..it sounds like we're voting in a new head of the UN or something )
i reckon age plays a part too. if i got an email from gc or pert or one of the old bats telling me to tone it down, i'd respect that more than from some 18 year old upstart like eru.
but not just age..it's also forum cred/intelligence. i'm more likely to respect an arsekicking from someone who's shown they've got a brain than someone who hasn't. so even though depreciative jones and bollocks are young, i'd still respect their opinion because they show they've got a few brain cells to rub together.
and right now i'm realising that i'm giving this way more thought that it deserves, so i'm going to go and slap myself around for a while now
Star Fish:
Yeah, I agree with that. Pretty much all of it in fact. However, I still think even the best mod would have a hard time around this place, because they're simply not going to be able to keep everyone happy.
Lexii-:
I think it's really sad that it's gotten to the point where there is that much abuse happening on the forum that new moderators have to be found.
When people come to The Chaser website/forum, they're expecting a fun and relaxed place- much like the television program; but unfortunately many of them get harassed the moment they join, and it isn't really giving a good image for The Chaser.
Hopefully once the extra mods come into place; the abuse and harassment will stop because it is really unnecessary.

I didn't even get mentioned? What a farce. Keridwen HAS been reported, and none of the people in Nate's post are the new mods. You guys are going to LOVE who they have picked.
Not that I have any inside information, of course.
