Sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

Why is there a minimum password length of 8 characters? I own a SMF forum and i can use 6. My normal password is 6 and easy to remember.

I would think if it's for the risk of accounts being hacked, it's the users own choice if they choose a shorter password.

I imagine this site has a profile close to 4 billion times larger and more well known than yours. Therefore security is more important. If your need a lesson on password lengths, I'm sure there are plenty of sites with information on the subject. 6 characters is hopelessly inadequate.

You say this forum is so big and use that as a reason why there is a 8 character limit. However, Digital Point is several times larger than this forum and they have a 6 character limit. Their security is fine and not "hopelessly inadequate". Size doesn't determine more security.

How can you even ask that!! Security on this forum (which is about a T.V. show and is 4 billion times bigger then my forum) is very important. Even if we reduced the password by 2 characters, would be hopelessly inadequate.

Yes because I know I'm going to hack into a person who uses the forum of a T.V. show 4 billion times bigger than another forum. Why does it matter? It's just a fucking account.

Ummm, weren't you originally questioning the need for the longer password and implying that you preferred your six digit one? I mean, I know bikkie can be very persuasive, but I didn't think his reply this time was *that* convincing. Obviously I was wrong!

I was asking why the password was 8 characters when i prefer 6. The default must have been changed so i just wondered why.

I only ask because I've reset my password about 3 times when i delete my cookies.

It's elementary factorials.
6 characters = 2,176,782,336 possible combinations
8 characters =  2,821,109,907,456 possible combinations

Look carefully for the difference. Pretty straight forward really.

The Chaser attract a lot of attention. There are even people out there who don't like them! (Believe it or not) Better safe than sorry eh? The default password on most computer systems is 8 characters. Why? Most human beans have no problem recalling an 8 character password, but struggle with 10 characters. So, it's the best length for systems than want security, but must also be usable by people.
