People using abbreviations in real life.
« on: September 27, 2007, 09:59:27 PM »

What pisses me off, grinds my gears, makes my blood boil, etc... Is when people use text message/MSN abbreviations in real life. I fucking cannot go 1 fucking day, without someone saying these:

"ily!!!"
"probs"
"lol"
"lolcopter"
"roflcopter"
"lmao"
"rofl"
"roflmao"
"ttyl" (actually saying the letters)
"brb" (also saying the letters)

My friend told me on the bus, 2 of my friends were arguing how the word thats not a fucking word word "lmao" was pronounced.

1. ITS NOT MEANT TO BE PRONOUNCED
2. NOBODY CARES HOW IT'S MEANT TO BE PRONOUNCED

One said, "it's Leh-may-oh" and the other "Ell-Emm-Ayy-Oh" It's just pointless and dumb and pisses me off to the core. Seriously, what has society come to, instead of laughing you say "lol" or "roflmao" and instead of probably, you say "probs". Also, instead of saying i'll be back, you say "bee arrr bee" and instead of talk to you later it's "tee tee why ell".

The day ANY of these words reach the dictionary, i will personally jump off the Harbor Bridge. I'm so sick, that people think it's okay in society to say these abbreviations. Some abbreviations are used commonly in society, like RSVP, ASAP. Are we really heading towards when people say "lol" instead of laughing. Someone fucking tell me.

I am a culprit of using "LOL" or "LAWL" or "LOLLERSKATES" "ROFLCOPTER" or "LOLCAUST" in public. Because it hilarious. Yes, sad, but also hilarious. Well too me anyway. But I don't often frequent them in my typing, unless taking the piss, and it's not like my conversations are based around them. LMAO, I think is push the boundaries of pronunciation because of the 'LM', but you know, I don't have arguments over how they're meant to be pronounced, and if it shits someone off I refrain from saying them in public. It all started out as a piss take, but then you know it stuck. Like my friend started saying "Awethum!" (awesome with a lisp), and now it's sort of stuck, and she says, not to take the piss. *shrug* tragic things happen every day.

Yeah, you say it a few times and it gets stuck. It's what happened to me a few times, but i got a rubber band and snapped it everytime i said it. Works a charm, and reminds me of how absolutely gay it sounds when i say it

my boyfriend and I tried to spread the use of 'teh' but we just kept sounding somewhat more retarded than usual, and no one seemed to know what we were doing...

What's wrong with saying 'probs'?

It's just a shortened word.

Do you have something against people saying

*Just a sec (second)
*am (ante meridiem)
*i.e. (id est)
*uni (university)
*A.D (anno Domini)
*B.C (before Christ)
*C.E (common era)

1. ITS NOT MEANT TO BE PRONOUNCED
2. NOBODY CARES HOW IT'S MEANT TO BE PRONOUNCED

People say a-sap, unicef, nasa, a-wol etc. etc.

(or should that be etcetera etcetera?)

Does it really matter if people are saying acronyms in real life?

If you don't like them... Don't use them. Just because you don't like them, it's not going to make people stop.

When you can't beat 'em... Join 'em.

The day ANY of these words reach the dictionary, i will personally jump off the Harbor Bridge.

I vote we start petitioning for these words to become part of the dictionary now.

Text messaging is just the modern (electronic) form of how people way back in the days would've have used pens and paper.

They're so you don't have to write as much.

People back then probably would've been complaining like you are when people starting saying acronyms...

Maybe...I'm not sure.

But that didn't stop people, now did it?

Depends if you want to laugh first, or apologise first.

The word is pronounced "owning". You see its a joke.  Its a play on the inability of suposedly highly dexterous gamers (ie those with uber micro) to hit the right keys when typing.  It suggests that the letters on the keyboard are only relevant to "pro-gamers" in as much as they represent actions in a game and not as letters used to communicate with others.

Oh, never mind.

It's from Halo, they made a typo that said pwn instead of own. Therefore all the nerds went "LOL @ HALO. I'LL PWN U N00B XCORE"

And people pronounce it different, like castle, or tomato... although a whole lot lamer. some pronounce it 'owning' but other pronounce it 'p-owning'.

Yeah, you have a point.. maybe it's just a phase that people say and everything? That it'll just go over and they'll kind of realise how stupid it sounds

Although I'm not against abbreviations, some MSN ones are pretty stupid in real life.

I mean, you type "brb" instead of "be right back", becuase it's quicker, but it doesn't make much difference when speaking.

"Lol" is used to indicate you are laughing...well, in theory, normally it's used to say "that's almost, but not quite, sort of amusing".  For which you could laugh, or chuckle or something in real life.

On a related note, "ie" means "id est", being Latin for "that is".  It does not mean "for example",  That really annoys me.
