What would you legalise?
« on: September 20, 2007, 01:59:26 PM »

If you had the power to do so in Australia, what would you legalise and why? Take this question as broadly as you can, ie: we're talking about things from marijuana to guns, from same sex civil unions to euthanasia and even to slave trade if you so desire. Also, would you leave it completely unrestricted, or would there have to be regulations in place? Discuss...

I am not going to rant here about my thoughts on the legalisation of mary jane. Bollocks is waiting for the opportunity to give me a word-lashing over it... again...  :|

Abortion.  I know it is effectively available on demand, but come on already....

Suicide. Again, available on demand, but really, what's the point?

It's been abrogated in NSW - The Premier State as well. There's still sentencing for encouraging others to commit suicide though, for example as a part of a suicide pact.

Ah, don't be shy now, I'll support you for one. Bud should definitely be decriminalised, albeit it should be regulated in some way. I think the Dutch have the right idea here. Why fund the criminal structures when you can tax the product, minimising the risk at the same time? :s Fair enough, the Cannabis reform and the introduction of infringement notices is a step forward, but it's simply not enough - leaving it at police discretion is foolish, they are people too, maybe they're having a bad day and decide to lock some poor hippy up for his measley plant.

Semi automatics should also be legalised. Now I know the problems associated with this, so perhaps they should only be sold to, say, someone who has held a firearms license without any incident for a certain period - 2 years would be fair. This way only the genuine sportsmen (like me) would be able to get em, and not the head cases who go and shoot up public places. To make it even safer, maybe a hardcore psychological evaluation is in order.

Around these parts the penalty is a one month ban.

Yeah, because there's lots of things you need semi-automatics for that don't involve killing lots of people.

Umm, I'm talking about sport usage, ya know, you go to a gun club, fire off at some targets, then get home and clean your precious. I personally prefer semis to the guns that you can legally own in Oz. I don't wanna kill anyone, I just love weapons of all sorts. I've got heaps of sword replicas at home, and countless pocket knives. I don't carry them around, I just think they're cool, maybe it's the last surviving part of my childhood or something :)

Just to clear things up, I don't want the same gun laws as the US, far from. But I agree with the Shooters that Australia has unnecessary restrictions placed on firearms, and I think that there are other ways to control gun crime, without limiting normal people as to what firearm they can own. Damn, I wish Oz got a bill of rights back in the day like the US and UK, I want my right to bear arms damn it!

Yes, but you don't NEED to have them.  You might think they are cool, but you'll get by without them.

In any case...muzzle loaders are more cool.  Especially if there is dressing up.  And it be hard to go on a shooting spree with a muzzle loader.

That depends, if I for instance had a "Muzzle Loading Scatter Gun", one shot in a crowded place and I would be taking out more people in one go, than you would with a full clip from a semi automatic. Getting the second shot off would be a problem though
