Howard vs Rudd... the fight soon to begin
« on: September 10, 2007, 10:39:24 AM »

"Prime Minister John Howard says he will lead the coalition to the election and insists he can still win."

http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/we-can-still-win-pm/2007/09/10/1189276581822.html

Do you think he'll do it? Speculation suggests he'll call an election for October 20th.

Dunno GC. I'd reckon 70% JHo will lead the Libs. It'd be 100%, but the Libs are in dire straits, their predicament is worsening, and OPEC's GWB backslapping won't have helped either. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

I find it hard to imagine that Costello's vision would match JHo's, and a few weeks of an election campaign wouldn't be enough time for Costello to get his message across.

The funniest thing about the whole affair is that it's Alexander Downer's job to tap JHo on the shoulder if the numbers go bad.

Do you think that if you were a fucktard and voted for Howard, you'd be shitty if he retired and we had Costello instead?

Do you think that Rudd will beat Howard this election, especially if it is called soon?

Nice strikeout.

Nah. Every voter must know that if the Libs are defeated then JHo will go. Most voters believe that if the Libs win then JHo's days are numbered. In fact the feeling I have is that there are a lot of Lib voters who are totally over JHo. They want their team to win but would want a new leader too. Someone with fresh ideas, broader vision and broader appeal generally.

Yes, but I don't think that the timing has much to do with it.

The Libs have a handy 16 seat buffer, which may save them, but I doubt it.

I'm not one to agree with too many of JHo's policies, but he's had the "golden touch" for years now when it comes to pressing the electorate's buttons in a vote-buying way. Lately he's lost that, and the icing on the cake has been the staging of OPEC APEC. All the publicity has gone to the "wrong people" i.e. The Chaser, security, police powers, stupid aspirations, Bushisms, etc. The good news of new billion $ deal signings have been pushed aside.

And to make matters worse for JHo, we are over all the war talk, yet Bush continued to do it in Sydney. Meanwhile Krudd steps in and steals some of the limelight with his "trade negotiations", done directly in Mandarin.

I know. I'm not a Rudd chick myself, but I'm not a JHo one either. When I vote, it ends up being based on which party the people I vote for give my preferences to... well, I think that's the way it works anyhow. I am one of those people who sit there and fill in the numbers under the line.

I think that people realise JHo is selling us short. He surfed in the last election on the premise of low interest rates, and people believed him. Then again, Latham wasn't worth voting for... Anyway, now they realise that he really doesn't have any control over interest rates, and with the last rise he tried to blame it on State governments. Not many believe him anymore. They may like the fact that employment is low (well, according to JHo if you work an hour a month you are a full-time worker) and that our money seems to buy us more stuff (although recently I've heard complaints about "stuff"... materialism and all that), but they still don't like the war.

Rudd's the most decent option that Labor has given us for a fair while now, so it may be him who gets to be PM.

Speaking Mandarin was a good move, methinks.

At the risk of teaching you how to suck eggs, when you fill in all the numbers you are directing the preferences, not the party.

Neither of these clowns will be getting my vote. It'll be exciting to see Howard get crushed and demoralised though.

Why does every fucking election end up being a "lesser of two evils" affair? What is this, the US all of a sudden?

When it comes down to it, the overwhelming majority of people vote based on what each party offers them on a personal financial basis. It also happens that most people want fairly similar things (owning a house, to pay as little tax as possible etc etc). Therefore to be a successful politician you have to try and convince the majority of people you will make them better off in this way. It really doesn't matter what each party stands for.

I think the whole thing is ridiculous, people should be voting based on their views not who's offering the most money but that's the way it is.

I find politics interesting but would never want to be a politician because to be successful I would have to hide or tone down my views, which I would not be willing to do.

I'd have to wipe my arse and put some knickers on.  Is that kind of what you meant?

I'd have to not punch arseholes that I'm talking to...  history has proven I'm not good at that,  and its much cheaper for me to avoid conversing with arseholes...
still,..  Its a wonderful feeling of satisfaction, mixed with 'oh shit, that was stupid...'

Well, I bet Hoawrd will lose, which is good, but then Rudd will win, which isn't.

Oh, and it's a bit naive to assume that people have learnt that Howard has been deceiving them and they'll vote against him becuase of it, though.  I mean, people have always been lied to by their leaders.  Everyone knows Howard has been lying to them, but people still vote for him...it's a popularity thing, not an honesty thing.

If you really believe that, then stick to off-topic one-liners
