Internets(tm) romance
« on: August 29, 2007, 01:43:41 PM »

Now it has a thread of its own :)

I was reading an article for uni which was discussing internet romantic relationships, and how people use online dating agencies. It really aroused my curiosity because although I have never used one, it seems like a really good concept. And there is the element of people who pretend to be someone they're not, but in this situation I would believe that honesty is the best policy, especially if you plan on meeting IRL.

Has anyone had any experience with these? I seriously don't want to laugh and poke fun - I am curious as to how this newer way of meeting someone, as opposed to going to a pub/club and relying on physical attraction, works for those seeking lerrrrrrve.  :-)

If you don't want to answer here, feel free to PM me. I'll keep it confidential.

Be warned, people - I may be asking more questions like this in the future!

I know a couple of people for whom it seems to have worked quite well. One of my friends has been going out with a guy she met that way for at least a year, although she did have to go to a bit of effort to lose another one who was a bit of a control freak... but that happens when you meet people through other means too, it wasn't a specifically internet thing.

Another friend just got engaged to her partner that she met through a dating website. They all seem like pretty normal people to me, so there goes the 'interweb freaks and old guys pretending to be 18 year old girls' stereotype  :-P

Although anyone who saw Chas' internet dating experiments at Cirque du Chaser will undoubtedly have been put off of the whole thing just as much as I was!

I know a few people who have met over dating sites. One of my teachers has no problem with openly sharing her love life to our class so I know that she went on about 10 dates with about 8 different guys () until she actually started a proper relationship with one.
Also, my aunty recently got engaged to someone who I believe she met on a dating website and it all seems to be going well for them. :-D

That's awesome. So why do you think that some people *looks shiftily at Yak* deride this way of meeting people?

Because of the 'dating agency/personal ad' flavour of distaste it summons up.  I met a guy of RSVP once, we had sent amusing little enigmatic emails back and forth for a few months.  (Yeah, I used the watermelon cat as my 'pic')  We met and got stinking drunk because we were obviously uncomfortable in each other's physical presence.  After closing time I took him home and took advantage.  We did the same thing the week after but with more alcohol, and I ended up unintentionally peeing on him.  That pretty much concluded the affair.

Yep, you meet some quality types online.

We have to friends that met on the net and are now married with kids. I don't agree with it. If you want to meet someone do it the Australian way, go out get drunk, have a shag and hopefully you will get there number

Typical female, can't just have a shag, have to get all clingy and try to get a contact number.
