ok, what does this mean? i have seen it bandied about on the forum here and there but i don't understand what concept it is trying to convey.

granted, this may be because the closest i get to 'media' is the news on classic FM, sometimes, when i'm driving.

the phrase 'smug media slut' in particular, while it probably seems funny on a superficial level, conveys no information to me whatsoever.

i am assuming that the people who bandy the phrase about know what it means and aren't just repeating it like a mantra because the chasers said so. did they ever say so? i don't even remember anymore.

explanations welcome.

I think the Chasers probably coined the phrase, I have vague recollections of it being in the Niccorette Ad Road test I think?
Basically, to the best of my knowledge, this was before Rudd became ALP leader and refers to his constant desire for the spotlight and his readiness to appear in any form of media from The Australian to the Townsville Advocate.

It is an endearing term used to promote future Prime Ministers. Let's face it. If you're going for the Big Job and you're not a media slut, you're kidding yourself. However, at this point, I can't see Rudd outdoing Howard in the 'smug' department....even though a few cracks are starting to appear.

Quite right. I swear I've heard something about teen mums being given their baby bonus in instalments. Now if 'abo bashing', addressing the baby bonus issue AND alternating welfare usage  (big tangle of moral highgrounds rolled into one) doesn't pique peoples Liberal-box-ticking fingers, I don't know what will.

If unemployment was so low, the economy so bright, and work place agreements so good, why would the libs give a hoot about welfare? Surely there must be bugger all voters in the 'need welfare' group?

don't forget 'professional dole bludgers' skive off hard working decent aussies who do in fact have a fair number of votes. those sub-human cheats need to be punished and john howard is just the man for the job.
