My condescension is based on the fact that my "weak" forum topic would actually be an acceptable topic for an assignment in a BA.  Not so in a real degree, such as Law, Commerce or Medicine.

Commerce?  The degree gained from reading the rules inside the lid of Milton Bradley's Game of Life

Law is a doddle too.  You hardly even get fucking assingnments.  One of the few courses you can put off everything until revision week.  Get your hand off it Tux, you would say acrylic nail technology was rigourous if that is what you happened to be doing.

I have more stuff to say on this, but I'm too tired right now.

Right, I have coffee, icecream and something more important I'm avoiding doing.

We need to split this conversation into homophobia and heterocentricity.  Homophobia does still exist, but is more prevalent in places with small gay communities.  The teacher at my school with the rainbow sticker on her ute (don't draw too many conclusions, everyone had utes where I grew up ) regularly had rocks thrown at her.  Another guy who made a push to attract the pink tourism dollar was driven out of town, the mob stopped just short of pitch forks.  These are the people who believe all gay men are pedophiles, and why my mum grieves that I tend to live in flat shoes.

Then there is the 'no, I don't hate gays, but obviously it just isn't normal/natural/good for society.'  This sentiment is responsible for the discrepancies in superannuation regulation or compassionate leave policy.  I call this heterocentricity.  It is the same reason people gape or point at same sex partners in bars or in the street.  They haven't considered that gay people may not consider their sexuality as a hobby, but may have the same hopes and dreams as anyone.  This may include commiting to a partner or raising a family.

Then you have the religious nutbars who like to tell everyone they are going to hell.  But don't worry, they think everyone who has had some second base even over the clothes action is too.

The best response I have heard to a Homophobe was from an American comedien

So you watch Porn
yep
you like watching little limp dicked men screwing for 3 minutes
No I like proper screwing big hard guys pounding away
aha
I never knew that about myself

Not many guys watch only lesbian movies (which is of course homosexuality at its finest)

How many people have watched "Short bus" wouldn't that be a funny movie to show at a footy club,

Movie of which I can honestly say showed things beyond my imagination

not a bad flick though

I still like this forum though I don't spend as much time as I used to here due to my current state of Joy and Happiness
having seen some of the alternative this place is still better than most.

We do? Weeeelll, Ok.

It can be quite fun to try and land rocks in the back of a moving ute. I don't remember a rainbow being a pre-requisite though.
Another guy who made a push to attract the pink tourism dollar was driven out of town, the mob stopped just short of pitch forks.  These are the people who believe all gay men are pedophiles, and why my mum grieves that I tend to live in flat shoes.

I find it curious that non-gay people often seem to think that gay people just want sex all the time. Almost as if that is why they chose to be gay (they did choose you know, I saw someone say so on TV).

Then you have the religious nutbars who like to tell everyone they are going to hell.  But don't worry, they think everyone who has had some second base even over the clothes action is too.
For those people, you can do anything they don't like ( - like cut the lawn on Sunday) and they'll be telling you you're going straight to hell though the fires of damnation.

Why are homophobes homophobic? Is it because they're afraid they'll 'catch' it, likes it's some disease? Is it fear of the unknown? It's certainly down to some form of ignorance.

I'm a Catholic and I get pissed off at those extremists who go around saying that everyone who is not exactly the same as them are going to burn in the fires of hell, not only because it is completly against what Jesus stood for, but because it makes outsiders think that that is what Catholisism is about and creates millitant atheiests. Having heard someone like George Pell speak I don't blame them. As to homosexuals, I think they are slowly becoming more tollerated in the community but in different ways. People can now are prepared to have homosexual friends but that doesn't stop them telling a homophobic joke or something like that.

What's an homophobic joke? If you watch The Chaser, you'll see no-one (well, almost no-one) is off limits. Here's a Catholic joke:

The Pope calls a meeting of all the cardinals.  When they have all assembled at the Vatican, he takes them into the meeting hall and states, "I have some really fantastic news and some very terrible news."  Of course, all the cardinals want to hear the good news first, so the Pope tells them, "Jesus Christ has returned to the world.  The time of judgement is at hand, and our faith in his existence is justified."

After the commotion dies down a bit, one of the cardinals speaks up, asking what the terrible news is.  The Pope replies, "He was calling from Salt Lake City."

Awww, Tux. Things haven't changed all that much! This must be about the eighth time that you've come back and complained about how the forum is shit!  :-)

Why are homophobes homophobic? Is it because they're afraid they'll 'catch' it, likes it's some disease? Is it fear of the unknown? It's certainly down to some form of ignorance.

This point interests me. I recently had a brief chat to someone who is homophobic, during which he said that he is really quite scared of gay people. This made me realise that I've never really thought about it from the whole 'phobia' point of view. I've only thought about it as people being ignorant and prejudiced, rather than actually being scared. I guess that's largely because people use 'homophobe' in the same way they use words like 'bigot', 'redneck', etc.

So can/do homophobic people get treatment for their phobia? Much like people who are arachnophobic, etc? It's not something I'm familiar with...

They wave a penis in their face until they can touch it.

For me the issues around homosexuality are not necessarily that there are people out there who prefer to have sex with people of the same gender. I say screw whoever you want, if it flicks your switch, do it.

There are many gay people who go about their daily lives with a minimum of fuss and fanfare. They have happy long term relationships, hold down jobs, buy houses, and have little bearing on this debate because they are so "normal" we don't notice them.

Then there are the "activist" gay people who espouse a desire to be accepted as an integral part of society and yet exhibit the kind of behaviour that serves only to exclude them from "normal society".  They insist on gay arts prizes, gay marches, gay footy teams, gay clubs and bars etc etc ad infinitum.  They effectively segregate themselves from the mainstream whilst criticising it for failing to embrace them.

These people I have an issue with. (not because they are gay, but because they are stupid, like treehuggers)

As for the ubiquitious Arts degree... I think the whole point of them is that they are study for the sake of study.  I fail to see how we, as a society are worse off for a better understanding of the disciplines contained in an Arts degree. Granted, they are of no direct commercial benefit, but they may help shape and influence the way view the world, given a more comprehensive understanding of it.

Thank you Perti.

Tux, I'm doing a BA and I am enjoying it alot. Just because I'm not learning how to brown-nose a judge or work out someone's tax return, it does not make my study any less valuable. I can tell you now that the people in other degrees will be more concerned with making money than thinking outside the square about life, the universe and everything.

As it is, the world doesn't have enough truly interesting thinkers - instead, it is chock full of materialistic sheeple.

Give me thinkers any day.  :-D

I believe it is the self-declared right of all non-Arts degree people to make fun of those with Arts degrees. As a greenie, vegetarian, arts degree lover, you're really asking for it!

Oh jesus christ GC, it's a fucking Arts degree. They should incorporate them into Year 11 & 12 studies.

Nice way of painting yourself as thinkers. I am picturing all this know-alls sitting around scratching their arse, telling everyone how such & such's theory on life back in the 1300's is still relevant today.

At least you have taken one step. You started at nothing, you are now a thinker, hopefully when you grow up and finally come to your senses and realise that an Arts degree is a waste of time, you can plan to be a Do'er.

In the meantime, enjoy that waste of time.  :-)
