Feedback on the new site
« on: June 05, 2007, 05:47:42 PM »

I totally don't want to be known as forum whiny bitch, but here goes with some feedback on the site. Please feel free to contradict me if I am overstepping or even (gasp) wrong.

Note I am aware the admins have acknowledged it looks weird - I just want to make sure we are talking the 'same weird'.

1. The static content on the forum is using too much space in my opinion. Whether you are looking at the index, unread posts, or an individual post, the user has to scroll down past:
(a) some white space which I am sure is being fixed already
(b) the DVD vol 2 ad
(c) a horizontal menu
(d) another ad
(e) some profile information and links to unread posts
(f) another horizontal menu

... meaning that the user has to scroll down at least one page on every page you look at.

2. Page load times are comparatively slow (at least for me) compared to before. The headers/banners pop up with some dark background, then a pause, then the forum content. Loading times range between 3-10 seconds on a quick connection.

That's basically it. I don't think the google ads look great in the left column, but they don't bother me.

Forum whiny bitch signing off.

Yes, the forum ads are weird, but funny in the sense that it's interesting to see what words they pick up from the page to run an ad about.

I'm not getting those other problems you mentioned, Neil. The forum looks quite normal (oh, except for the white space, but I didn't even notice that until you mentioned it) and the format change is good.

I agree on the load time, though, but I put it down to our PC being slow...? I guess not.

It will be fixed (I have on good authority), but in the mean time, you can click the "+" at the top-right of the forum to hide the profile info etc that chews up a bit of room. Other than that, just grit your teeth for a bit - Dom is a very busy guy.

Hey that '+' does improve it a bit :) many thanks. Totally didn't mean that post to come across as really negative if it did - I do some web admin and I know I don't really enjoy the 'instant feedback' from users when a change doesn't quite come off as expected.

Please don't ban me Dom.

At the risk of being labelled a total whinger like Neil..................... :-D

I use Firefox with AdBlock Plus and never see ads (sorry Chaser)

The site looks fine to me, apart from the text overlap on the links just above the posts. It's funny how quick one forgets what the old site looked like and adapts to the new.

The old site would occasionally change format to something similar to what we have now, then magically switch back when a link was clicked. The current site hasn't done that yet.

Yeah, the site's a bit slow particularly around lunchtime and thru the afternoon. I put it down to all the public servant types around here who've spent all morning looking out the window, become bored and flicked across to here. :-D

And I'm just grateful to have a place like this to occasionally escape the world 8-)

ok bikkie you obviously have a 'connection' or something. well i've figured out why it is that sometimes you get multiple threads being spawned for an article, and other times it works properly. i believe the fix is pretty easy to implement too, so if you could get your good authority to look at the joomla module which is activated when someone clicks 'add a comment', find the portion of the code where the new topic is inserted into the database, and make sure that the topic title string is having its double quotes " correctly escaped, that would be great. While they're at it, if they could find the portion of code where the database is queried for any topics whos titles match the title of the article, and make sure that the double quotes are being escaped correctly in the search string, i'll be grateful.

I think it would be neat if there were pictures of ponies all over it, and every hour someone won a prize.

I pretty sure the chaser team were thinking the same thing, but couldn't find a suitable pony picture. How about we suggest this one?

The greatest change is that our Euire is now all grown up and has become a moderator.
